In our new “how can we help you?” thread, a reader asks:

I’ve been seeing more people publish in the asian journal of philosophy. I’m not familiar with this journal, what are people’s impression of it? Is this considered a good generalist journal?

I have to confess that I wasn’t aware that the Asian Journal of Philosophy is a generalist philosophy journal until now (and I appreciate the heads-up!).

Any thoughts from readers?

    Well, it’s new, from 2022.

I like that it is open access, but don’t like that you have to pay to publish in it. Consequently, in my view, it won’t likely reach the success of other new-ish generalist journals such as Philosophers’ Imprint and Ergo. But yeah, it is new – so who knows?

  3. Not OA

It isn’t a true open access journal like Ergo or Phil Imprint. It’s a hybrid journal like many others that charges the typical insane fees for OA publications.

I recently reviewed a submission for that journal. It was interesting and good quality. After one round of revisions, it ended up being a strong paper. So, anecdotally, I get the sense that the journal seems promising. I also see other papers published there on interesting topics.

I’m biased, but I am a big believer in the Asian Journal of Philosophy. The EiC is very active and is constantly looking for ways to improve the quality and visibility of the journal. I also appreciate that it takes its mission as an *Asian* journal seriously, with special collections about cross-linguistic disagreement, cross-cultural experimental philosophy, truth in Asian philosophy, so on. More personally, I think it’s a good methodological counterbalance to the usual Asian philosophy journals (Philosophy East and West, Dao, etc.).

I like the journal. It is also interesting to note that it accepts original research articles (including short pieces of less than 4,500 words in length). Having another venue where short pieces can be accepted is definitely a good thing.

I recently had a paper accepted there and I enjoyed the overall experience. I found that the reviewer comments were highly constructive and of great quality, and the editors handled the submission with care. I’ve also been enjoying reading papers being published there.
