I myself am focusing on getting articles published, some of which have been drawn from the dissertation, some not. Then there are two book projects that build on themes present in the dissertation that I would like to get working on shortly after tenure. But I'm curious to know whether anyone here has decided to go the book-as-means-to-tenure route, so standard in certain other disciplines but not so compulsory in our own. I am assuming that anyone who has is likely making the dissertation into a book, but I'm all the more surprised and intrigued if you have taken on a book project unrelated to your dissertation in your move toward tenure.
I wonder about how hard the dissertation-to-book path is. Is it difficult trying to figure out how to change and improve all that old stuff, or does it feel like the easy task of tidying up now that the monumental task of initial research and writing is all in the past? Are you trying to publish articles from it while also making it into a book? Are you sick of it?
I'm also happy to hear from people about their reasons for *not* going the book route.
