In several earlier posts, Trevor considered the pros and cons of having children at various points in one's career. I'd appreciate our readers' advice on a different but related question: If you do decide to have children, how do you balance the demands of parenthood and the demands of an academic career?
I'm sure that the answer depends on a wide range of factors, including where you are in your career, whether you live near your family, whether you have a partner or spouse and, if so, what he or she does, how old your kid(s) is/are, and so on. But I also suspect there's a lot that generalizes. At any rate, what strategies or resources would you recommend (or not recommend) for philosopher-parents?
Please keep your responses short enough to be understood by the severely sleep-deprived.
