The other day I had an interesting conversation with colleagues
about teaching the equivalent of Intro to Philosophy at our institution. The
two dominant approaches that emerged during the conversation were as follows:
- Content-based approach:
According to this approach, by the end of the course, students should be
familiar with selected theories and arguments advanced by major philosophers
(e.g., Descartes’ mind-body dualism, Mill’s utilitarianism, Rawls’ theory of
justice, etc.) - Skills-based approach:
According to this approach, by the end of the course, students should be able
to detect arguments, evaluate them, and defend their own beliefs about philosophical
issues with reasons and arguments.
During the conversation, we considered reasons for
and against each approach. But I’d like to ask you, my fellow Cocooners, which approach
you take in your own Intro to Philosophy courses and why.
