Consider the following:
Big Shot philosopher publishes an argument for p. Then, No
Body publishes a decisive refutation of Big Shot’s argument for p. Big Shot’s
paper gets widely read, of course, since it was written by Big Shot, whereas No
Body’s paper falls stillborn from the press. As a result, the philosophical
community is in the grips of Big Shot’s argument for p, not realizing that there
is a decisive refutation of this argument out there.
Philosophy has made no progress!
To ensure that Philosophy does make progress, then,
do Big Shot philosophers have a professional obligation to engage with and
respond to critics?
