I took a brief look at the Phylo job wiki today (which I have avoided looking at, and will continue to avoid!), and noticed that at least a couple of on-campus interviews have already been scheduled. Although I know it's still early, I thought it might be good to have a series of posts asking readers to share advice on fly-outs before they begin being scheduled in earnest (I was going to wait a bit, but I had one reader with a job-talk already scheduled ask me to post on it, so I've decided to go ahead with it!).

So, I would like to dedicate this first post soliciting, and discussing, general advice on what to do, not do, avoid-at-all-costs, etc., during flyouts. I will then devote separate posts to job talks and teaching demonstrations (anything else I should cover?).

So, then, anyone have any general advice on fly-outs?

If you have a tight schedule and have to run from office to office to meet different people, wear a watch or find some other way of keeping track of time (without having to look at your mobile phone all the time). Find a way of politely telling people that you have to go to the next meeting, even when you are in the middle of an intense debate.
