Now that the job market is upon us, and deadlines rapidly approaching, I thought it might be good to have a post soliciting job-market questions from readers. Questions may be about anything: dossier materials, which jobs to apply for, etc.
Here are a few questions I have right offhand:
- What is one to make of jobs that only allow three reference-letters to be uploaded? It seems a bit strange to me to limit the evidence that a candidate might submit on their own behalf in favor of their candidacy. Anyway, if you're a candidate who has multiple letters, and you can't read your own letters to determine which are best, how are you supposed to select which three letters to send?
- Is there any sort of advantage/disadvantage to applying early? On the one hand, I can imagine that if committee members might want to look at materials submitted early because it would make their job easier later–in which case submitting early might get your dossier a better look (since it won't be with the hundreds of others submitted at the deadline). On the other hand, submitting early could just be a waste of time…
- [UPDATE] If you have an AOS in two areas (say, Ethics & Political Philosophy) and you're applying to a job in one of those areas (e.g. an Ethics job), are you at at a disadvantage if your writing sample is a piece of work from your other AOS (your best piece of published work so far is in political)?
Anyway, do you have any job market questions you'd like to get answers to? If so, ask away!
