A reader writes,
I am the only philosopher at my institution…I am running the philosophy minor here (we have no major)…and I do the observations of our adjuncts, most of whom are graduate students in the area. Thus, I awkwardly need to start writing teaching letters while I myself am on the job market. I have never seen such a letter, having never served on a search committee, and my letters being confidential, I have not even seen them. Any advice?
I've never written teaching letters, so I can't give advice on how to write a good one. Any thoughts/advice? I do, however, have some questions about the reader's situation. Is it appropriate to write letters of recommendations for others while one is a junior person on the market oneself? How should someone in this person's position handle their situation?
