A reader has written in to ask whether any search committee members might be willing to share their experience with Skype interviews–specifically, which sorts of things they "look for" from candidates in Skype interviews. Are there particular things that make candidates stand out, either positively or negatively [e.g. things that tend to trip candidates up]? If so, what are they?

Any past or present search committee members willing to share their thoughts? Thanks, in advance, to everyone who chimes in!

One response to “Reader query on Skype interviews”

I haven’t been on the faculty side of Skype interviews, but one thing I was told in a practice interview last year was to be careful of my hands. If you use them when you talk, they can show up unusually large because of the way your webcam lens picks them up. It might be distracting.
