A reader wrote in with the following query:
I am in my final semester as ABD and seeking a (preferably) TT job. My undergraduate degree is from a place whose name strongly suggests that I am a very conservative religious person. I am concerned about having my other qualifications overlooked due to that presumably negative impression. In my case, the impression is highly misleading, for a number of reasons. Is there anything I can do about the way the school’s name appears on my cv that could easily be explained were I to make it to interview, and which would not be regarded as deliberate misrepresentation?
Given recent events involving Wheaton College, this seems to me a very salient issue. However, I'm not at all sure how to best answer it. Does anyone, particularly people who have served on search committees, have any potentially helpful insights here?
