In the comments section of our job-market discussion thread, Anon writes: 'So suppose you have an interview and someone says "tell me about yourself." What, on earth, are you supposed to say in response to this question?' Maybe this wouldn't be an odd interview question in the non-academic work (I'm not sure), but it sure does seem it bit off-beat for academic jobs.
How would you all reply to a question like this? What would you consider a good answer?
More generally, what kinds of odd interview questions have you encountered, and how did you reply? Do you think your reply was a good one? Why/why not? The only oddball question I remember getting was, "Why do you think you've been on the market so long?" To the best of my recollection, my answer was something like, "It's a tough market." I think it was a good answer. 😉
