Each year, readers ask for threads for discussing and reporting news on the job-market. I just posted this season's discussion thread here. Please visit that thread if you are interested in discussing/commiserating about this year's market. The current thread (below) is for reporting news on the market (i.e. reporting interviews, flyouts, offers, hires, and so on). Although it should go without saying, commenters are asked to remember the Cocoon's supportive mission while reporting.

Note: I've placed permalinks to both threads on the right-hand side of blog.

Once these start accumulating multiple pages, is there a way to easily get to the most recent comments? Last year I found myself clicking “next” a million times. Thank you! 🙂

  2. Marcus Arvan

Anon: Unfortunately, there does not seem to be any way to do that. What I have done is now set each comment thread to allow up to 100 comments per page.
That should reduce the number of times people have to click “next.” You can also always just copy the URL of the most recent comments page to a note on your desktop and then paste it in to go directly to that page. Hope this helps!

The Lawrence University job seems to be gone. Does anyone know what happened? Did they come up with a short list by the end of August and close the thing to further applications? Was the search canceled? Something else?

  5. Recent Grad

I’m also curious about Lawrence. The job was for this year, though it didn’t specify that in the philjobs ad. Maybe it wasn’t really an open search and all along the department planned to do an inside hire? The time table just seems too compressed for a genuinely open search.

  6. Ian

The job was for this year? Jeez. I never even realized that. I’m feeling pretty foolish right now–I’d been quite excited about that job, but hadn’t recognized that it was an impossibility for me.

  7. Justin

Did anyone else apply to the Uworld position that was advertised on PhilJobs? Does anyone know if they have hired a philosopher for the position?

  8. Job seeker

    Quick rejection from Bard.

  9. Anon

Does anyone have clarification on Bard? I didn’t get the rejection email, though I was definitely not the candidate supposedly chosen.

  10. Anon

I think someone would have to email them to really get clarification. Maybe the search is done, maybe the not-rejected are on some sort of long list, maybe something else.

  11. Anon

    They have scheduled Skype interviews!

  12. Michel

I think they meant that they’ve drawn up a short list, but they didn’t bother to change their rejection email from last year so it still says they’ve hired someone.

  13. Tom

Anyone know anything about the Munich logic job?

  14. There doesn’t seem to be a jobmarket wiki this year, so let’s start this thread up again. Anyone hear anything from Villanova? Brandeis? Reno?

  15. Applicant

Did anyone else receive a form letter from Gonzaga asking that you make sure letters are uploaded by Friday?

  16. Yet another applicant

To applicant: yes, I did. Interfolio and their peopleadmin site say that the letters have been sent to them already. So, I think it is just an automated thing.

  17. Recent PHD

Did anyone receive an email from Clark University asking for a teaching dossier? As I recall, the job ad didn’t ask for this. But they seem to be asking for it now. Perhaps I’m mistaken.

  18. Arsene

My sense is that the open Kant position at the University of Memphis is an inside hire: they have a visiting Kant specialist from Penn State. My sense is the same about the open Contemporary/Continental position at Vassar: they, too, have a VAP whose credentials closely fit the job description.

  19. Marcus Arvan

Arsene: I would really encourage job-candidates not to get hung up on which jobs look like ‘inside hires.’
I knew of a number of cases during my time on the market where the ‘inside candidate’–someone who looked like they were a shoo-in for the position–didn’t get the job. I also have some very real (ahem!) inside knowledge of why inside candidates are sometimes passed over!
I think you might be surprised at just how committed search committees typically are to hiring the person who they think is the very best for the job. Indeed, here is how I have seen and heard things often go: the committee does have an initial preference for the ‘inside candidate.’ Then, however, Skype interviews occur and the committee becomes enamored with someone else. Whereas the inside candidate is a ‘known quantity’, the committee begins to wonder whether some outsider candidates they are enamored with would be an even better hire. Then, for one reason or another–including a spectacular on-campus visit by an outsider–the committee might pass over the insider.
Over the years, I’ve heard many stories of this sort of thing happening–and I had first-hand experience with something pretty close to it.

  20. Another Round

Recent PhD, yes, I got that request also. The ad didn’t ask for it, but the way the request was phrased made it seem like I had forgotten to include something that they had already requested. I think they had meant to ask for it, but didn’t.

  21. Recent PHD

    Another Round, thanks!

  22. J

I didn’t get that request from Clark, and (like you) I hadn’t submitted a teaching dossier, since it wasn’t requested. I reckon this means I didn’t make some initial cut. Maybe you did, though–in which case, congrats and good luck!

  23. Arsene

Marcus Arvan: Thank you for your response. I agree with all you say: an “inside candidate” is not necessarily a sure or guaranteed hire. I have had firsthand experience with this as well, and have seen it go both ways: the “insider” walks through the hire without second thought and the “insider” who does not get the job because of exceptional first- and second-round interviews by an outside candidate. However, I am a proponent of being optimistically realistic. I find that departments are more risk-averse than in the past – even in just the past 3-5 years. A “known quantity” in a VAP is safer than the risk of offering the position to someone who may/may not take it, or, who may/may not stay. Losing a candidate these days, given budgetary constraints, might mean losing a line. Thanks for your thoughts, though: part of my optimistic realism is optimism.

  24. Anon Prof

Seconding what Marcus says about not getting hung up on inside hires. I’m at a department hiring this year, and we are hiring in an AOS that we happen to have a postdoc in this year. We also have have a visiting professor in this area this year, and a former, amazing TT professor in this area who wants to come back. None of them are getting first-round interviews, and whoever does get the job will have no direct connections to us whatsoever. I have seen similar situations at two previous departments, and only in one case did the “inside person” get the offer (in one other case, the “inside person” did get a flyout and did eventually get the offer, but only after the first-choice candidate turned down the offer).

  25. Mercado

Emory sent notice to those who didn’t make the semi-finalist list for the Latinx Studies job.
Although, they said that they will continue to review applications until December 8th. So, they may still reach out to more applicants until December 8th.

  27. curious

Is there a jobs wiki this year?

  28. Recent PHD

curious, I don’t know if there is a wiki, but some graduate students at Brown have made this spreadsheet:
    https://drafty.cs.brown.edu/ajobs/#!data?-?2~Philosophy
The main piece of useful information it can potentially provide if people crowdsource the information in an honest manner is the column that says “position status” which will tell you whether interviews have been scheduled, etc.

  29. Anon

This is the wiki from several previous years, that still seems to be in use:
    http://phylo.info/jobs/wiki
It’s a bit unfortunately inefficient, that there’s three places to watch if you want to keep track of this information. Currently the phil job wiki has info that isn’t here or in the spreadsheet above (Gonzaga) and the spreadsheet above has info that isn’t here or on the phil job wiki (Florida).

  30. Anon

The Florida update looks a bit strange: deadline Nov 8, and they already interview? It’s strange because in the job ad they say that they will do first round of interview in January. Is there someone here who can confirm this update?

  31. bob zorn

Got an email from Hartford on 11/19 that they have selected desired applicants. Which is strange because their deadline was 11/19…

  32. ABD

Bob Zorn, that’s interesting. I applied and didn’t receive anything. Are you among the selected?

  33. bob zorn

I got the impression that I’m one of the rejected…
Quote: “We were fortunate to have many candidates to choose from and, at this time, we have selected the candidates we feel most closely meet our requirements.
We wish you the best of success in your career pursuits and thank you for considering the University of Hartford.”
I applied a week or two earlier, so perhaps they reviewed and rejected as they go? I found it quite confusing.

  34. ABD

Thanks for the update then. I, too, applied early, but haven’t heard anything. Who knows what that means.

  35. Rob

    Bob Zorn,
When I’ve been on search committees, we did not wait until the deadline to begin reviewing applications. Depending on the year, we would get the majority of our applications some time before the deadline, and will have finished reviewing almost all of them before hand. So we often had a good idea of who we were interested in before the deadline. So it might only take a day or two, or sometimes a week, to review the ones that came in ad the deadline and we were ready to move on to the next step.

Many applicants apply before the deadline. Many search committees start reading the applications as they come in.

  64. Anonnie

Re: Chicago. Have first round interviews been scheduled for only the senior hire?

  65. anonymous

If you’re organized, 12 days is plenty of time to make a short list. Especially if you are not advertising an open AOS job. I don’t know how many applications they got, but my guess is somewhere in the 150-300 range. My experience with hiring is that usually about 10% of the applications you get completely don’t fit the job at all (e.g. people who do ancient ethics applying for a logic job). You only need 30 seconds with one of those to toss it out. Different committees work differently, but you might assign a chunk of the applications to each committee member (maybe), or overlapping chunks, or whatever. It’s really not that hard especially if people know the timeline in advance and set time aside for it. (Most committees are not this organized, but some are!) It’s not like (most) committees are reading every single writing sample carefully. Some are. But most are spending a couple of minutes on each application, looking at cover letters/CVs/letters/research statements, and narrowing down to those that are interesting/fit the job/whatever. The real work starts when you cut down a very long list (everyone you want to take a second look at) to the long list (the names you want your colleagues to look at)–there you might start reading or at least skimming writing samples (I do read some of them earlier when e.g. someone seems interesting but has no publications, or has what appear to me to be really overinflated letters). Every committee works differently, but when I was on a committee I’d guess this first step (getting to the names I wanted my colleagues to look at) took me about 6-7 hours total, so could be accomplished in 1 day (though I did it at night spread out over more time). Second step is to review other people’s proposed candidates (maybe another 4 hours) and meet and discuss, and that takes however long the meeting lasts–maybe 2-3 hours. So, while this is just one example of how a committee might work, if you’re organized and prepared, coming up with an interview list in 12 days is not magical. I do think that most committees are not that organized and prepared, so it sounds sort of magical…

  128. A little perspective

“580 applications for a single job, even if it’s open/open and in NYC, is legitimate cause for alarm.”
It’s been worse in the recent, post-2008 past. In December 2009, I received a PFO from Boise State stating that they’d received 588 apps. That’s Idaho, mind you; not NYC. As I recall, around that time Barnard (or a similarly nice, NYC school with an open AOS search) received 800 or so apps.

  129. Michel

A couple years ago I got a PFO for a postdoc in NYC that claimed 1200 applicants. 600ish is normal for open/open jobs.
It is a lot, however. For a real chance at a job, you’d have to apply for as many jobs as there are applicants. And we’re clearly nowhere near that mark

  177. Marcus Arvan

Anon: I know it is frustrating to receive a PFO that says they were impressed–and chances are it’s just a form letter. However, having served on several searches, I can safely say that search committees are impressed by many/most of the candidates they see.
This is the real problem. There are tons of genuinely impressive job-candidates–and in my experience many search committee members wish we could hire most of you. But we can only hire one, and we can only interview something like a half-dozen. So it can be very hard to choose, and it is often small differences that make the difference in who is interviewed (and hired) and who is not.
    Fwiw.

  178. Anon

    Marcus,
Like what small differences? Can you please give a few examples?
Pfo’s are bad enough but pretentious and disingenuous ones add insult to injury. We are people, we deserve better!
    Thank you for your reply…

  179. Job seeker

Anon: when I served on a TT search committee, there were tons of unbelievably impressive people we couldn’t even interview. We had a bunch of different considerations (were interested in certain kinds of work, could talk productively with various members of the department, would be interested in certain kinds of interdisciplinary work, had taught courses we needed to be taught, etc) and there were so many great candidates that we really didn’t have to compromise on any of them. The people we interviewed were better fits for our job, but they weren’t necessarily better philosophers overall.

  180. peterman

PFO from Arizona (moral sciences search).

  181. Marcus Arvan

Anon: The smallest differences can make a difference.
Take two candidates (A and B) a committee likes basically equally well. Suppose the department needs someone to consistently teach course X. Candidate A has experience teaching X, candidate B none. This may be the sole difference in a decision to interview (or even hire) candidate A over B. A committee might literally know no other way to decide, as the candidates may be basically ‘tied’ in their mind. So they use the slight difference in experience as a tiebreaker.
Here’s another tiny difference that might make a difference: only candidate A has a background in subject-matter Y, the committee thinks students might be really interested in Y, and candidate B has no background in Y. Even if Y isn’t listed in the AOS/AOC, that could be a tiebreaker.
Here’s a third case: suppose candidate A and candidate B are basically “tied”, but one candidate has actively sought out interesting service experience (e.g. interest in and experience designing websites, doing assessment stuff, including formulating assessment measures and statistical analysis) that the department needs (believe it or not, some departments need faculty to do these things, and depending on the university, the relevant skills may not be very easy to learn). That too might be a little thing they use to break the “tie” between the candidates.
I could go on. These kinds of decisions, based on tiny differences, might seem totally absurd to candidates–but I would expect that many, many search committee members would maintain (on the basis of substantial experience) that they are not absurd at all.

  183. Anon

Thank you for your efforts to explain but telling someone that they are a good philosopher but they are not hired is never going to be something that can be explained away… Especially when it’s done using impersonal template form emails from the hr department…

  184. Anon

There’s more to say; how impressed by a candidate sc members may be has no meaning or value. Every pfo is evidence of a failed academic career because very simply a career that cannot provide a decent living is a failed career. So sc’s should stop sending such insulting and disingenuous pfo’s. They do not serve any purpose other than exacerbating the already awful situation the candidate is in.

  185. Random job market person.

What would you prefer? “Sorry, we just don’t think you are worthy of employment”? They have to say something, might as well be something nice.

  186. Anon

What I’ve been trying to say is what they do say is dishonest. Telling me that I’m impressive yet dismissing me without even a Skype interview is self-contradictory and ends up being insulting. And yes, I would prefer smt like “you are not good enough for our department.” That at least would be honest.

  187. Marcus Arvan

Anon: a few years ago a SC sent out a “cold” PFO basically telling candidates they were judged unsuitable for the job…and candidates on forums like this criticized it relentlessly. There’s no way to write a PFO that’s going to make every candidate like you happy. That’s why they are called PFO letters.

  188. Amanda

I think the best way of doing it is something like, “We wanted to inform you that you were not selected for an interview. Alas, there were far more qualified applicants than we could select.” But Marcus is right: first, many search committee members are impressed by candidates they do not interview (anon I know PFO’s suck, but your argument that it is impossible for a search committee to be impressed if the candidate is not interviewed just doesn’t make sense.) Also, there is no way for search committees to send PFO’s that are acceptable to everyone. That said, I do think there are better and worse ways to do them.

  189. Philonous

California Riverside (core analytic philosophy) will conduct Skype interviews next week.

  190. recent SC member

“Telling me that I’m impressive yet dismissing me without even a Skype interview is self-contradictory and ends up being insulting.”
It’s not self-contradictory at all. As many others have pointed out, and as I can attest from my own experience on a search committee, there are a lot more impressive candidates than interview spots. Why are they impressive, you ask, if they don’t get interviews? Because their work is good, because they publish in good places, because they have good letters, and so on. It’s just that there are a lot of those people and sometimes little things make the difference.

  191. Anon

    Amanda,
Why does it not make sense? I think it is quite reasonable to expect that if a sc is impressed by a candidate then at least they should interview the candidate. Otherwise they shouldn’t say they are impressed…
What about this essential courtesy “just doesn’t make sense”?..

  192. searchin

Anyone know how/when Kentucky scheduled fly outs?

  193. Marcus Arvan

Anon: That is absolutely absurd. A search committee member may be impressed by 40 candidates. However, they may only be permitted by their institution to interview 6. Thus, they will choose the six that they are most impressed by, or at least the six they are most impressed by who fit what they are looking for in a candidate, given the job-description. Consequently, a search committee member may be very impressed by a given candidate yet choose–rationally and morally–not to interview them. I don’t see how this is very hard to understand.

  194. non-Leiterific grad student

Barnard’s PFO seems to hit the right notes:
    “Dear [X],
Thank you for applying to our Assistant Professor position for the coming academic year. It was an extremely competitive search: we received over 580 applications and had to decide among hundreds of excellent candidates. We’ve now decided on the candidates we will interview, all of whom have now received invitations from us. I’m sorry that we were unable to consider your application further.
I wish you the best of luck in your future pursuits.”
No sloppy cut-paste job, no comma splices, no disingenuous praise. (Surely, at least one of the 160 applicants who put in for the Wisconsin job did not “impress” the committee!) Barnard just said “thanks,” noted how competitive the search was, and offered well-wishes. Why can’t everyone follow this formula?

  195. Another job failed candidate, but no failure

Probably not the best idea to go to graduate school if your only grounds for doing so rest in the hopes of getting a job. If there’s no way for you to see the endeavor of having studied material that you find interesting for a number of years as successful failing getting an academic job, then you’re setting yourself up for failure. There just aren’t enough jobs. Graduate programs in philosophy need to do better at emphasizing this, and candidates need to get better at knowing what they’re signing up for.

  196. anon

The form letter line that I hate the worst is
“We received many impressive applications and our decision not to interview you is in no way a reflection of your quality as an applicant.”
That just sounds like an unnecessary and transparent nicety. Clearly, your decision had SOMETHING to do with the quality of my application.

  197. Anon

    Marcus,
I do not deny the fact that sc members may be impressed by more candidates than they can interview. But it is not absurd to ask for the tiniest bit of common courtesy and understanding to not say you are impressed by candidates whom you won’t interview. The reason is that when you get a pfo saying you were impressive you infer that, as you and many others say repeatedly, you were rejected for some little reason you can’t do anything about. It is worse than a cold pfo because it creates learned helplessness and exacerbates pessimism and despair. It is not much to ask sc members to send out more considerate pfo’s…

  198. anon

Can anyone who got a Gonaga fly out provide more info?

  199. anon for snark

Barnard PFO is decent, to be sure. “Sorry not be able to pursue your application further” is a bit of a false note, however: surely they cannot honestly say that to all 580 applicants! Not collectively, certainly (who could be sorry not pursue at once) and not distributively either (surely they are glad not to have to pursue some of them).

  200. Anon

Also curious about Gonzaga fly outs… can someone confirm?

  201. Amanda

“I think it is quite reasonable to expect that if a sc is impressed by a candidate then at least they should interview the candidate. Otherwise they shouldn’t say they are impressed…What about this essential courtesy “just doesn’t make sense”?..”
Because a search committee can be impressed by more candidates than they can interview. Unless there is some logical part of our universe that makes it impossible to be impressed by more candidates than there are interview spots, then it is easy to see how a search committee can be impressed by candidates and not interview them.
And as I already said above, I do think a straightforward PFO stating that one didn’t get the job and that there were more qualified candidates than spots is the best way to go. I get why praise sounds disingenuous: because it is a form letter, and the committee obviously doesn’t have genuine praise for every applicant.

    Marcus,
I think the “cold” PFO you’re remembering was from Toronto (for Ancient v Medieval, if memory serves). If so, that PFO noted that several hundred candidates applied, but went on to say that the committee couldn’t agree on any “qualified” or “suitable” candidates, or something to that effect. If that’s the one, it seems a little different from a standard PFO to me. (A little worse, I mean.)
I don’t pay much attention to my PFOs either way. But I vastly prefer one that says how many applicants there were.

I dunno know about yall, but the many rejections that I’ve received from journals, grant applications, etc., pale in their PFO-ness compared to these job-related emails. So, I would say that, since this kind of rejection only gets worse and more frequent from here on out, and is a sadly necessary feature of nearly every single aspect of our profession, time to develop as think a skin as you can and stop taking these things personally. Not easy, but required, I think, in order to get by

  213. another postdoc

I agree with robots, although I think once you’ve had a hundred or more they start to lose their sting kind of naturally, at least they did with me (the not having a job still stings; the individual letters not so much). In fact I’m now appreciative of the places like Rochester and Gonzaga that gave me final word right away; it’s worse when it’s already July or whatever and you get an out of the blue reminder of the job market season.

My university, for instance, has us put all of the first round interview candidates who would be competent hires (so, usually basically all of them) on the waiting list, because we can’t hire anyone who has been taken off of it. I don’t think that we’ve ever had to invite a second round of fly outs, though. (And if we did, it would be after all of the first set of fly outs had either visited and been judged unhirable or visited, been offered the job, and turned them down in sequence. So, months.) Sorry :-/

I have a question: say that X job has sent out interview requests according to the blogs on Wednesday. Then, I get an interview request from X job two days later on Friday. Does this mean I was a backup? Or could they have sent out the interview requests in stages?
I know this is really speculative and probably unhelpful, but any thoughts on this matter is appreciated.

  359. anonymous

Paranoid: don’t worry about it! That happened to one of my students in a recent search that I happened to have inside info on, and it was just that the search chair had staggered the requests (so, they were scheduling each interview before contacting the next person). It could be this and one of the first people posted it on the wiki. Or it could be someone from the search committee who posted, but they hadn’t actually contacted anyone yet. It could be anything. (But more importantly prudentially you shouldn’t worry about this because there is no point even if you are a backup, I know that part is easier said than done…)

  408. pablo

One wonders what is the point of putting out job ads / searches for early modern philosophy / history of philosophy if you are going to hire the same people with AOSes or research in Ethics / Metaphysics and Epistemology, without any actual research in early modern/history. As if the vast majority of jobs are not already in those AOSes and thus taken by whoever works precisely in those fields – and this all the while there are so few early modern/ history of philosophy positions to begin with and so many competent scholars in those actual AOSes out there. It seems to be such an arrogant assumption that someone analytically-minded with an Ethics / Metaphysics and Epistemology AOS can teach everything, including early modern, while the reverse – for hiring committees – is rarely the case. The chances of getting a job listed as searching for an Ethics/Metaphysics and Epistemology AOS as someone working on early modern/history of philosophy are 0. As a hiring committee, why even pretend that there is a need for early modernists / historians of philosophy anymore?

  409. anonymous

    Hi Pablo,
If you’re referring to Bates (I have no idea if it is true that they hired PS, but assuming it is), all the job ad said is this:
AOS and AOC should include History of Modern Philosophy, Environmental Ethics, and Political Philosophy
I think pretty clearly this suggests that the search was a disjunctive search in history of modern, environmental ethics, OR political philosophy, with a requirement that the candidate have at least an AOC in the other two areas. I don’t think most people think that AOCs require doing significant research in the area. Also, if you’re referring to PS/Bates, surely, since he’s been there a while, they have a good idea of whether he fits their departmental teaching and research needs. I don’t see what the arrogant assumption is. (Maybe you’re talking about something more general? But I sort of doubt there is a big phenomenon of contemporary analytic M&E/ethics people being hired for history jobs.)
I also (truly) don’t understand people’s anger about “inside” hires. The person who got “inside” hired is just another person who needs a tenure track job, and is likely (I don’t know the person in this case) very very deserving of a tenure track job. I don’t get why departments should be obligated not to make inside hires, or why people think it is an outrage when some place advertises a job and then hires an inside candidate. Plenty of times the inside candidate does NOT get the job.

  410. Marcus Arvan

I agree with anonymous. Candidates who get upset about inside hires need to bear in mind two things. First, inside candidates often get passed over (I’ve heard of and known a number of cases like this). Second, when inside candidates do get hired, it is because the search committee genuinely believes they are the best person for the job.

  411. grymes

I am all for inside hires, and all against the requirement that committees do national searches. Just let ’em make the inside hire, and don’t waste everybody’s time and emotional well-being!
Any word on the York University jobs?

  412. Marcus Arvan

Grymes: I agree, but I don’t think universities can do that. Although I may be wrong, I believe universities are required to run open searches by federal law. I believe it has to do with civil rights—that because universities receive federal funds (including federal student aid disbursement), universities must advertise all positions openly to prevent discrimination. That, at least, is what I recall hearing.

  413. anonymous

York has what looks like job talks for the history job posted on their website. Not sure about the other job.

  414. Gene

when inside candidates are hired, other candidates feel like their time was wasted (and like their emotions were drained). let’s stop pretending like we don’t get what’s frustrating about inside hires. grymes gets it. be like grymes.
and yes, we know that schools are still legally required to advertise, and no, this doesn’t make anyone feel better about it.

  415. Marcus Arvan

Gene: let me pose a serious question to you and Grymes. With the way things are currently done, inside hires sometimes are made but sometimes the inside candidate is passed over because the committee judges an outsider to be the better candidate. This at least gives outsiders a chance to compete for the job—and again, outsiders get such jobs fairly often.
Would you or Grymes really prefer an alternative system where you have no chance for the job? That seems plainly irrational to me for a job candidate. Even though the current system in some cases “wastes outside candidates’ time”, it doesn’t really. It gives them a real chance. That’s better than no chance, or so it seems to me.

  416. Anon

My department made an inside hire and, in my opinion, he wasn’t qualified for the job as advertised. It’s just that a number of people in my department had become close friends with him and wanted to keep him around. Let’s not pretend that there’s an even playing field between inside and outside candidates.

  417. Marcus Arvan

Anon: no doubt the playing field isn’t level. I never suggested it was. Of course there is probably a preference for an inside candidate. And although it may be unfortunate, sometimes that may involve hiring someone not as qualified. All that being said, I’ve seen a number of cases of inside candidates being passed over for outside ones–and my general experience having served on search committees is that people tend to want to hire the best person.
Again, no the playing field isn’t level. But it’s more level than it would be if departments didn’t have to do a search at all. And I don’t see the point of worrying about things one cannot control. The world is what it is: sometimes people have an inside track on things. All one can do is become the best candidate one can and let the chips fall where they may.

  418. thejobmarketjustaintright

Did UNLV go straight to campus interviews?

  419. Inside candidate

There was a search in my area in the department I am a postdoc in. I did not get selected, though I had a Skype interview (for fairness, since I was across the hall) and came close for a “flyout.” I know people get riled up when departments hire inside candidates, but being on the other side, as an inside candidate that didn’t get hired, it also feels terrible. I was clearly a strong candidate in my colleagues’ eyes, so not getting to turn my temporary position into a permanent one, having now to need to move myself and my family after living here for several years is very upsetting. And this when I was clearly one of the department’s top five choices. Of course all five of us would have done a good job, so why not just let me stay where I have developed relationships and a life? This might sound winey to many of you, but do recognize that now I see around me colleagues who decided my fate and chose to not allow me to stay. It sucks from the inside candidate’s perspective immensely as well.

  420. Amanda

There is nothing wrong with inside candidates. Sure sometimes they might get hired unfairly – but sometimes outside candidates get hired unfairly too. I tend to think most inside candidates are very qualified, and often they are at a disadvantage because what is unknown is compelling and you don’t know their faults. I wish it was possible for schools to just hire inside candidates without a search when that is what they want to do . Some searches do seem to waste people’s time.

  421. Gene

“Would you or Grymes really prefer an alternative system where you have no chance for the job?”
This is a strange question that I don’t quite know how to answer. Above, anonymous said that they didn’t understand what anyone found frustrating about insider hires. Grymes suggested part of an explanation: searches where departments have a preference for their inside candidate, but do not advertise their preference, feel like a waste of time and emotion for everyone else, and having one’s time and emotion wasted is frustrating.
Now I guess you might ask: Why is it a waste of time to apply to such jobs? Well, in many cases, had other candidates known that there was a preference for an inside candidate, those other candidates wouldn’t have bothered applying.
But this is where you tell me that you know of plenty of searches where the preferred inside candidate didn’t get the job, so it always makes sense to apply, and so it’s never a waste of time to apply for jobs where search committees have strong preferences for inside candidates.
And this is where I tell you that it’s not always appropriate to give other people advice, and this is one of those situations where you should just listen to people when they tell you that they’re frustrated at not being given enough information to decide for themselves that the odds of landing a particular job are low enough that they don’t want to risk investing their time and emotion into applying for it.

  422. grymes

    Hi Marcus,
Thanks for the background info; I’m (genuinely) glad that the national search requirement has a high-minded rationale, though I’m still against it (since I suspect that it does little-to-no actual good w/r/t civil rights).
Yes, I really would prefer a system in which I had no chance at jobs with strong inside candidates. I think it makes good sense to hire people who have put in their time as an exceptional teacher/colleague/scholar at your institution, even if you might have hired somebody else if you conducted a national search. The job market system should be less punishing for applicants like me. But that doesn’t mean it should maximize my personal chances of getting a job.

  423. Marcus Arvan

Hi Gene: I understand their frustration. Like I said, I’ve been there. I just sincerely don’t think there’s anything to be done about it. Anyway, I won’t offer any more advice on this if it’s not wanted.

  424. Marcus Arvan

hey grymes: Thanks for your reply. I know all too well how punishing the market is, and I empathize. I guess it would be better if candidates at least knew whether there’s a preferred candidate–as that would enable candidates to make a more informed decision. I just don’t see that happening. We all saw what happened when Notre Dame accidentally posted job ads with preferred candidates. And I expect there may even be legal reasons for schools not to do that sort of thing (though I’m not sure). The job market is what it is: hell. I just tried to do my best with it, and am not sure what else there is to do unfortunately. Anyway, I wish you the best and hope you get the job you’re hoping for.

  425. grymes

Hi Inquirer, Princeton doesn’t do interviews or fly outs for junior level jobs. I have no idea about the rest of those places. Also no, two weeks is not an adequate amount of time to assume that there is no hope.

  456. Amanda

2 weeks? are you serious? More like 2-3 months since the application is one. I mean, it can be quicker but 2 weeks is way too soon.

Anonymous: someone has received a pfo for the open position. I’m waiting to hear about the data ethics one (I’ll send an email tomorrow). I don’t know about the tt in medical humanities

  485. Random job market person

I think for the Rice open position some people have received pfos and some have not. Earlier somebody said that they were focusing on associate prof level first, and only looking at assistant if that doesn’t work out. So my best guess is that associate level candidates who have been ruled out have been sent pfos, but assistant level candidates are still in limbo.

  486. anon 01/31/2019 at 11:35 AM

I got a PFO from the Rice open TT job, and I’m assistant level (ABD, so not borderline)

  487. Random job market person

Huh, then I have no explanation. I have no PFO, and I doubt I’d be considered as an associate level candidate. I certainly applied as an assistant level candidate.

  488. I have a general (set of) questions. Does anybody know when “PFO letters” are sent out in the US? In the UK at least, the norm appears to me to be that one receives a “PFO letter” as soon as one doesn’t make the cut for a particular stage (whichever that is: long-list, interview, short-list etc.). Is it possible that in the US they are sent out all en masse after the final hiring decision is made? Does it depend on the job?

  489. philosopher on the job market

Thanks for the comments on Rice University’s position in the Department of Philosophy!

The gist is this: many schools have requirements that they not send PFOs until after someone has been hired. And unfortunately, many schools never end up sending them at all.

PFO from Lock Haven this morning. And a PFO from UC Santa Cruz a couple days ago.
Anyone have word on Westminster or Samford? Their application due dates were some time ago (Nov. 1 and Dec. 1 respectively) but I don’t recall seeing anyone post about PFOs or interviews yet.

  508. Another

That’s the one. I received the PFO a few days ago, and I know they already had 1-2 campus visits, and a couple more to go. I don’t know why I got it then, but maybe you are still a backup candidate. Good luck!

  509. anon

  513. Mara Bollard

Does anyone know what’s going on with the recent (Feb 20) post at HigherEd Jobs for a (the?) TT job at VCU? https://www.higheredjobs.com/details.cfm?JobCode=176925968
Seems like the job is probably the same as the one with the October deadline for which an offer has already been made (i.e. this one https://philjobs.org/job/show/10950), but why the new and slightly different in content HEJ post?

  514. Anon3?

Anon & Anon2: Coincidentally Norwich reached out last night for first rounds.
Mara: I was confused, too. Minimally, when I searched for jobs on their hire portal, there’s two Philosophy Positions listed (one TT, one old adjunct). When I clicked on the TT, it said “View your completed application”. So, I’m not sure whether they are reopening, or it was a mistake. But, minimally, it doesn’t look like a new position, or at least old applications are already in.

  515. Mara

Anon3: thanks for your reply! I clicked through to the VCU hire portal from each ad (which had different links, oddly!), and ended up in the same place, with access to my old application. Still a bit of a mystery, but I don’t mind not having to do another app 🙂

hello! has anyone heard anything about the el camino community college position? perhaps community colleges take longer to process applications in general, so this could be a post for the other thread. if so, apologies

  527. Dr. Job Seeker

I applied to El Camino College and haven’t heard back yet. In my experience, community colleges can take a wide range of times for turnaround. I’ve heard back about first-round interviews as early as two weeks after closing and as late as two months after closing. The closing date for this ECC job was Jan. 9, so there’s a decent chance they’ve already sent out first-round interview invitations, but it’s possible they still haven’t done so.
Also, I’m not sure if you also applied to Cerritos College, but I got my PFO from them on Feb. 21.
