I've written many times in favor of changing the peer-review process, but also on the importance of persistence in peer-review as it exists now, given its imperfections. I'm also always looking for vivid evidence in favor of both. One source of evidence I've shared before is the litany of groundbreaking (including Nobel Prize-winning) economics articles that were rejected from top journals in the field, often on the flimsiest of grounds (in some cases, it seems, due to violations of anonymized peer-review). Today I came across another wonderful set of examples: this list of 8 rejected Nobel Prize-winning papers (many of which I've read about previously here). Here are some particularly fun ones:
1. Enrico Fermi's seminal paper on weak interaction, 1933 – rejected from Nature for being 'too removed from reality', but won Fermi the 1938 Nobel Prize in Physics.
4. Rosalyn Yalow's invention of the radioimmunoassay, 1955 – rejected 'by The Journal of Clinical Investigation, because the reviewers were skeptical that humans make antibodies to small molecules like insulin', but later won Yalow the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1977.
5. Peter Higgs' paper outlining the Higgs mechanism and predicting the Higgs boson, 1964 - rejected by Physics Letters on the grounds that it "did not warrant rapid publication", but later won Higgs the Nobel Prize in 2013 after the Large Hadron Collider verified his prediction.
6. Ernst's paper outlining nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, 1966 – rejected twice by the Journal of Chemical Physics, but won Ernst the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1991.
7. Schectman's The discovery of quasicrystals, 1984 – rejected by Physical Review Letters 'on the grounds that it will not interest physicists", but won him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2011.
8. Kary Mullis' first paper on polymerase chain reaction (PCR), 1993 – "Dan Koshland would be the editor of Science when my first PCR paper was rejected from that journal and also the editor when PCR was three years later proclaimed Molecule of the Year" – won Mullis the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1993.
In sum, if your papers are rejected, you're in pretty good company! 😉
