In our newest "how can we help you?" thread, Anon writes:
Nearly every single job ad I read says something like the following: "Please explain how your research, teaching, or service would/do contribute to a climate of diversity and inclusivity."
Are there effective ways to do this without sounding too on the nose, so to speak?
I would love for committee members to speak to how they think this can be done effectively because it is so pervasive in job ads now.
What are you looking for?
My general worry is that things I say come across as forced/disingenuous, i.e. "I make sure I include non-canonical texts in my courses."
Good questions. I have heard a lot of job candidates raise similar questions, saying they have no idea what to write in these things. My guess is that the thing to do is to simply report any clear ways you have been involved in diversity and inclusion efforts (at a department or university level), as well as any things you actually do in the classroom like the kinds of things anon mentions. But beyond that, I have no idea. It would be great to hear from some search committee members on this!
