In our "how can we help you?" thread, a reader writes:

This is probably not super important, but on your CV, how should you list an article when the online publication date is very distant from the print publication date? For multiple papers of mine these two dates are in different years.

I'm thinking of just writing down (2020 print / 2019 online) where I would normally write the date?

I agree, it's probably not super important, but to be honest this has always confused the heck out of me too! It's confusing not only when it comes to listing things on your CV, but also when it comes to citing other people's work. For example, suppose Smith's paper in journal X was published "online first" in 2020, but then is assigned to a journal issue in 2021. Presumably, once it is published in the 2021 journal issue, everyone should cite it as Smith (2021). But, given that it was originally published online in 2020, should one cite it as Smith (2020) until then? Or should it still be cited as forthcoming?

Like the reader, I realize these questions are probably pretty small beans–but still, it would be great if we could clear them up!

One response to “Different online/journal publication dates?”

I value aesthetics too much to write “(2020 print/2019 online)” on my CV, or even my reference lists. Advice I was given was to list with the online year, until it comes out in print, then update the CV with the new year. I do the same for referencing in papers. Since my CV and now many journals print DOI numbers, all other information (year, title, etc) is superfluous. I mean, if someone wants to find a paper listed on my CV (or cited in my papers), it’s not like they’re going to the library to physically pull out the volume of the journal.
