Each year, readers ask for threads for discussing and reporting news on the job-market. I recently posted this season's discussion thread here. Please visit that thread if you are interested in discussing/commiserating about this year's market. The current thread (below) is for reporting news on the market (i.e. reporting interviews, flyouts, offers, hires, and so on). Although it should go without saying, commenters are asked to please remember the Cocoon's supportive mission while reporting. A link to this thread will remain on the blog's right sidebar for the remainder of the job season.

I didn’t know about this post, though I’d have loved to apply for it. Does Anon or anyone else know where it was advertised, so I don’t miss the next one? Thanks… -
Utrecht (tt in history and phil of life sciences) scheduled first-round interviews.
-
Anyone hear about the Turin job.
-
Holy Family University has scheduled first round interviews
-
Florida Gulf Coast (open, TT) requested further application materials.
(Not sure whether that is significant in any way given that search does not close until 12/5, but it’s nice to have something to report this year.) -
First round interviews scheduled for Stanford’s Race in America search (specifically for philosophy department’s part of this search).
-
Houston (TT) (open) requested letters of recommendation (which wasn’t required at the time of application). Not sure how significant this is though.
-
PFO from Future of Humanity Institute at Oxford (Postdoc).
-
What is a PFO?
-
Please fuck off; the general terminology for form letter rejections from universities, i.e,
“We had many qualified applicants and please do not take our decision not to interview you to in any way reflect the quality of your materials.”
Welcome to the job market! -
PFO from UMBC Postdoctoral Fellow for Faculty Diversity
-
The Virginia Tech PPE/political science job (https://philjobs.org/job/show/15862) went to first round interviews (from the political science rumors website).
-
St. Norbert College (business ethics, TT) has scheduled interviews

Hi, this is my first year on the market. I know that in some years there was a job wiki. Does anyone know if there is a job wiki this year? If so, where can I find it? I saw this webpage https://academicjobs.wikia.org/wiki/Philosophy_2020-2021
but there doesn’t seem to be too many updates there. I might be looking at the wrong place, or people might not be updating there, or there might not be any updates at this point.
I am particularly interested in knowing whether anyone has heard more news about the Houston job after the request for letters of rec. -
houston has conducted at least some zoom interviews
-
PFO from the University of Alberta Killam Postdoctoral Fellow
-
PFO, University of Alberta Killiam postdoc
-
Any news on the other job at the University of Alberta (tt in phil sc and technology)?
-
I applied for the Killam postdoc as well and have heard nothing. I also got no confirmation that my application was received. Should I be anxious? Hopeful? None of the above?
-
Thank you, jobjobbjob!
-
Has anyone heard anything from Berkeley (epistemology etc. tt) or Hopkins (open tt), or have insight into those timelines?
-
idk: I didn’t receive any response from Alberta acknowledging that my Killam app was received, but I did receive the PFO. So I wouldn’t take the lack of confirmation (at least on its own) to be evidence that your app wasn’t evaluated.
-
Has anyone heard anything about Chicago TT (Oct 15 deadline)?
-
Re Berkeley: They haven’t contacted applicants yet
-
PFO from Dartmouth Society of Fellows.
Wonder what went wrong with my application as they sent me five identical rejection letters over two hours.
PFO from UBC Political Theory Assistant Professor Position. -
Nothing yet from Chicago on my end.
-
Any news from Santa Clara?
-
Heard from a friend that Chicago has scheduled at least some interviews for the Oct. 15 TT.
-
@gambling addict — you don’t by chance know when they started scheduling interviews, do you?
-
LSU (ancient) sends unnavigable message saying job has closed due to “necessary job description revisions,” that they “posted the revised job description and welcome applications and materials,” but with link simply back to original job posting, for which cannot be re-applied.
-
Dying: I got the same message. At first I was confused, but then I noticed that they referred to a different job ID. I think they sent this message to people who applied for the Ancient position that got cancelled because of covid last year. Of course, they’re sending out this notice after the deadline for the new position this year. Either that, or I think it’s some kind of system error.
Lottery player: Within the past few days. Sorry I can’t be more specific. It wasn’t me (though I did apply!). -
dying: I received this rather puzzling email too. The reference number in that email, R00040911, is the number for last year’s (failed) search, which did indeed close. The reference number for this year’s search is different. My best guess is that this is some super-late HR email that was meant to alert last year’s applicants about this year’s search…but was sent the day after review of the applications began! My application for the current search is still listed as “in progress,” and, like you, I can’t apply again, so it doesn’t look like our applications for this year’s search were affected.
-
@Gambling and @oudeis, thank you and that makes a lot of sense. You’re probably right.
-
U Chicago (Society of Fellows multi-year teaching gig) is requesting further application materials.
-
UNC Wilmington has requested letters of recommendation.
-
Has anyone heard anything about Hamilton?
-
@postdoc no.2: Did they reach out to candidates directly for them, or did you hear about this from letter-writers?
The online application said they would only ask for letters with the verbal consent of the applicant, but that’s the pre-written university language, so I’m curious. -
Postdoc: I got an email from the department directly asking me to send the letters through Interfolio.
-
Santa Clara has begun scheduling first round Zoom interviews.
-
RE: the LSU search: I got the same nonsense message, and decided to follow up with both HR and the department.
The department administrator kindly replied, and clarified that HR was supposed to contact last year’s applicants and let us know that there was a new search. (Apparently they did not do this until after the search closed, so there’s that.)
Our newly submitted materials are good to go! -

UNC Wilmington is scheduling first-round interviews.
-
Which Notre Dame job are you talking about? (anon)
Thanks -
@Ouch, I am so glad to find the remark utterly ruthless!
-
@xmas spirit: I think anon means the Notre Dame Tech Ethics Center job. In any case, that one has scheduled interviews.
-
Thanks. I’ve been waiting on the NDIAS (Faculty Fellowship at Notre Dame).

I have a hunch Alabama has already started scheduling interviews. Anyone confirm/deny?

@Idk: Lynyrd Skynyrd came to me in a dream with a message.
No, actually I just had a flurry of visits from Tuscaloosa to my website a week or so ago, and then nothing.
(I know this is proof of nothing. I know keeping track of these visits is a bad habit to get into. I don’t advise anyone else to do this. I know it’s only likely to cause stress. I just can’t help myself.) -
Has anyone heard from Toronto (philosophy of science) other than automatic messages asking letters?
-
PFO from Utah Valley (epistemology_broadly construed)
-
The National University of Singapore notified candidates who are on the long list
-
To Roll Tide:
Don’t assume much from website hits about the stage of the search. I have had hits the day I’ve been contacted by the search committee. But on the other hand, when I applied for my current position, I had a flurry of hits on my website from this university about six weeks before I got the first round invite, and no hits at all from them in that intervening month and a half… -
To Roll Tide: For your sanity you should remove the tracker from your website, then.
-
Moderator, I don’t think authenticity’s comment is consistent with community standards. The comment is sarcastic, mean, and explicitly targeted toward a particular user. This is supposed to be a forum where people can be vulnerable and open about the market without being made fun of.
-
Concerned: Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I didn’t read it that way (I saw it as lightheartedly mocking the absurdities of the job market). But I appreciate your concern now. I’ve unpublished it.
-
Marcus Arvan, you read it right. I was having a bit of fun, adding levity to the situation. But God forbid someone might take offense to a little bit of humor and request that my comment be deleted. I understand you had to take that down for political/moderator reasons, but come on. This is the state of professional philosophy, where we can’t play a little bit? As soon as someone uncharitably interprets my comments, they must be taken down to spare their feelings? No wonder so many people look unfavorably on philosophers. Ah well, I suppose I’ve just been personally targeted by Concerned, and I request that Concerned’s message be removed 🙂
-
authenticity: I appreciate the attempt at levity. Yet, as I think we all know, satirical humor often runs the risk of offense—and in this case, I think your poking fun at another commenter’s situation (and the advice they received) was open to multiple interpretations, not just the innocent one you intended. I don’t think this says much about the state of philosophy. I think it says something about this particular forum (the Cocoon): namely, that attempts at humor that may be entirely fine in other contexts may be borderline or out of place here. I don’t think this is a negative. The job market is brutal, and (as I well know from my time on it) emotions can run very close to the surface. I do appreciate the attempt at levity—but the #1 priority in this section of cyberspace is to preserve the blog’s safe and supportive mission. It’s a difficult job as moderator, but I do my best. Let’s move on and do our best to support each other. I think there’s much to be said for this mission.
-
Marcus Arvan, Fair enough. As someone on the job market, I know its insanity and ability across the board to wear people like me down—which is why I like to laugh about it. But I’ll keep my wit out of this forum because not everyone can appreciate it. And I very much appreciate what you’ve done here—that you’ve set up this space for people who are applying to jobs to share their experiences.
-
Authenticity: I’m not offended and my feelings aren’t hurt. I just thought your post was potentially hurtful because it was too directed to a particular user and inappropriate for this space. I would certainly feel less comfortable posting anything about my personal struggles with the market here (including obsessively checking this thread!) if there was no conversation about where our community draws the line between levity and levity at someone else’s expense.

has anyone heard from Ryerson?
-
Concerned & Marcus Arvan: It took me a few days to realize it, but y’all are absolutely right – this just ain’t the place for that kind of stuff. Thanks for helping me to understand that, and my bad for being impetuous and not recognizing it sooner. All that being said, I want to wish eveyone on the job market the best of luck!

Re: Hopkins: like… actual honest to god flyouts? Jesus.
-
Has anyone heard anything from LSU about the Ancient Philosophy job?
-
Has anyone heard anything about Carleton?
-
Any news on Dartmouth?
-
Have interview requests been sent out for UBC (TT -ethics)? I saw above that PFOs were sent, but I applied and have received neither a PFO nor an interview request.
-
anon, I’m in the same place re: UBC. I’m guessing they have a long list they’re trying to turn into a shortlist.
-
Any info on Macalester?
-
Ryerson (feminist philosophy) says they have made their long list of candidates and I am not on it.
-
Re: “Have interview requests been sent out for UBC (TT -ethics)? I saw above that PFOs were sent, but I applied and have received neither a PFO nor an interview request.”
I’m in the same boat as you, anon. Looks like they just made a first cut. -
Same here for UBC (TT ethics). I haven’t received any word at all.
-
Has anyone heard anything about Toronto (Phil Science)?
-
Any news on NYU Shanghai or the University of Toronto (Philosophy of science)?
-
Any news on Alabama or Toronto (philsci)?
-
To Tom, re Hopkins flyouts: the flyouts are virtual
-
Mac: I’m also still waiting on any updates from Macalester.
-
Just received the PFO from UBC (TT-ethics). I’m the same anon above who didn’t receive the PFO yesterday.
-
Yeah, I just received my rejection letter from UBC (TT-ethics). I had my hopes up because I thought they would have sent out all 1st cut rejections in one burst. I wish I hadn’t checked this board and gotten my hopes up 🙁
-
I am still in limbo w/r/t UBC. This is agonizing. 🙁 I do feel like I’m also getting my hopes up.
-
I’m in the same boat with UBC. Haven’t received my rejection yet, but probably will by tonight or tomorrow.
-
Re: UBC Ethics, TT
I’m also still waiting for any communication from them.
Thanks for the info! -
Does anyone have updates about the Utah Valley position (epistemology)? About a week ago someone reported a PFO from them, but I have yet to receive any communication.
-
Ah, finally got that sweet sweet PFO from UBC.
-
1st round interview scheduled for University of Washington Evans School of Public Policy and Governance.
-
Interviews for UW Evans School of Public Policy Ethics and Justice
-
Also curious about LSU.
Houston looked like they’d be moving quickly – can anyone confirm that they’ve made an offer?
Finally, Georgia State, Ancient: real job or setup for inside hire? I’m not gonna waste my time if they’re hiring the person there who does exactly what is in the job ad. [Mods, delete this bit if it’s inappropriate.] -
Lawrence has sent out first-round interview requests (AOS metaphysics).
-
Too tired: Without going into details, I am pretty sure (re: have good reason to believe) that the GSU job is a setup.
-
Oudeis and too tired: I just want to say (on the basis of some personal experience) that a job can be a set up for an inside hire and yet result in the search committee taking other candidates very seriously and even hiring them above the inside person. I don’t know any details whatsoever about the Georgia State case, but my own experience is that while inside candidates may have an “inside track” on a given job, search committees generally want to hire the best person for the position—and if that turns out to be an outside person, then they may very well not hire the person they initially thought they probably would (the inside candidate). I personally know of multiple cases where this has happened.
-
Invitation to virtual campus visit at UC Berkeley (TT, Open-ish).
-
PFO from Santa Clara Tech Ethics job.
-
PFO from Santa Clara University
-
any news re: Toronto continental phil?
-
@suprised Did Berkeley go straight to campus visits or were there already first round interviews? Congrats 🙂
-
PFO from UBC. They must be sending them out one-by-one.
-
@postdoc1000 straight to campus visits!
-
Has anyone heard from Eindhoven??
-
Macalester has sent out first-round interview requests (AOS mind/language)
-
First round interviews for LSU ancient job scheduled.
-
St Andrews (lecturer, ancient) sends out email announcing that they will have a shortlist by late January ’21.
I’m liberally going to interpret this to imply that I’m on the longlist without any further evidence, since there’s not much cause for excitement this year. -
I also got the same email from St. Andrews, but for the open area position. I don’t know what to make of it. Did anyone get an email saying something different or didn’t get an email at all?
-
You should not make anything of it. I got it too. It is clearly just a courtesy to applicants to let them know when they can expect to hear from the search committee about whether they’ve made it to the next stage.
-
I also got the same email, for the open position.
-
Toronto Scarborough sent out an email on the 24th (they had previously asked me for a second writing sample) saying that their search has had a small delay and that they will be in touch in early January when the university reopens.
-
Hi Hopeful, is that the position in the philosophy of science?
-
Utah Valley has scheduled first-round interviews for the epistemology position.
Sounded like they were either in the process of scheduling or had already scheduled interviews for their asian phil position as well. -
Has anyone heard from Washington and Lee? Also, the AOS and AOC in the job ad seem to exactly match with an internal candidate’s AOS and AOC. Curious about this search. Any thoughts?
-
@ABD no, this is the applied ethics/biomedical ethics one. The Philosophy of science opening is for the St. George campus, I believe.
-
@ Hopeful, thanks! Then I can still be hopeful about the job 🙂
-
Toronto philosophy of science has gone straight to (virtual) flyouts.
-
@ Heard from a bird, thanks for the update. I guess going straight to virtual flyouts is a new trend in this pandemic.
-
A few days late, but in case anyone else was waiting to hear: Georgia Southern has scheduled first-round interviews for their applied ethics position.
-
Has anyone heard from Baltimore City CC (open), CC of Baltimore County (open), or Southeastern Oklahoma State (open)?
-
Any news about Carleton, NYU Shanghai, Brown, Dartmouth, Yale, Tübingen, CUHK, or UHK (all TT)? Thanks!
-
Waiting: I’ve applied to almost all of those. No word on my end.
-
Waiting and Lottery: Brown has conducted first round interviews.
-
Any news on Union University, DeSales, St. Mary’s, or Belmont Abbey?
-
waiting: UHK (political) has conducted first round interviews.
-
has anyone who had a first round interview with FGCU heard about second round*?
*which will apparently be in-person (!) -
Anon – no, I haven’t yet, even though they said they’d let us know in Dec. Waiting impatiently:)
-
Has anyone heard from the following places:
Princeton Desai Post Doc?
Dartmouth Society of Fellows and Mellon Post Doc?
Notre Dame (NDIAS) fellowship? -
Xmas spirit – yes, I got rejected from the Dartmouth Mellon postdoc a while ago; but I haven’t, and I’m also waiting for the Princeton and the other Dartmouth one.
-
Does anyone know if Notre Dame (the TT position) decided who to invite to “campus visits” after their first-round interviews?
-
Xmas spirit – I got a pfo from the Dartmouth Society of Fellows a while back! Haven’t heard anything from Dartmouth Mellon.
-
@Waiting, if I recall the wrap-up conversation correctly, Notre Dame tech ethics TT said that they wouldn’t decide until “mid-January” and that the virtual fly-outs would be some time in February once their spring semester starts.
-
Thanks, postdoc #3! They didn’t mention a timeline for making a decision to me, so this is very helpful.
-
Anybody heard if St. Norbert has decided who to fly out after Zoom interviews?
-
@Waiting glad to help and best of luck!
-
Has anyone who was asked for a second writing sample by UT Scarborough heard from them since 12/24?
-
anon @2:07pm: apparently the shortlist has been drafted, and is on a dean’s desk, but no interview invites can be sent until s/he approves it.
-
Wondering if anyone has heard from Cambridge or Yale?
-
@utscanon did they email you again to tell you that, or is it something you found out by asking for more info? Any idea if the people who got the email on the 24th are the people on the shortlist?
-
Rejection from Michigan Society of Fellows
-
Rejected from the UT Scarborough job (I was one of those asked for a second writing sample in December).
-
Has anyone heard about the McMaster Phil Law job?
-
Anyone knows what happened with Alabama (phil med)?
-
Had a first round interview at FGCU.
I’ve been given the complete run-around.
I contacted them and was told by the committee chair there was nothing they could tell me and to contact HR.
HR said search is still in process.
I informed search chair this is what I had been told by HR and she said she’d find out if she was authorized to tell me anything further.
TLDR: no official decisions have been made that I am aware but if I am reading between the lines, I did not make the next cut.
Can anyone confirm or deny that FGCU has moved to on campus interviews? -
Hi anon, I’m in a similar situation. I asked the HR there if the decision have been made yet, and she told me they have not made the decisions yet. I would not worry – it just looks like they’re still deliberating!
-
Rejection letter from Utah Valley U (epistemology).
-
@phil: Did this rejection come after an interview with them? Or is this a general rejection letter?
-
@Interviewee: general rejection letter
-
Thank you, phil!
-
MIT tech ethics/social and political has gone straight to virtual fly-outs (https://philjobs.org/job/show/15958).
-
are most of the interviews scheduled already? cambridge? yale? toronto phil sci? johns hopkins? berkeley? no news from either of these places. should i still be hopeful to receive an interview request or is the time kind of over for the 2021 job interviews?
-
Johns Hopkins and Berkeley have gone straight to virtual fly-outs.
-
Someone reported earlier that Toronto phil sci also went to virtual flyouts. I will add to the list of questions: Does anyone know if National University of Singapore decided on a shortlist?
-
@A I heard that NUS has made a list of finalists and scheduled virtual flyouts.
-
Thanks, anon!
-
Any updated news about Northeastern?
-
@Islander, Northeastern has begun virtual flyouts.
-
When did MIT send the details about the virtual flyouts? any details?
-
Santa clara tech ethics has scheduled for virtual flyouts.
-
McMaster (phil. law) has scheduled virtual flyouts.
-
PFO from Oxford Somerville College Fellowship
-
Has anyone heard any news from UNC postdoc or Princeton Desai Postdoc? Or does anyone know/have insight into/can make an educated guess about their timelines?
-
@mit? MIT sent one virtual fly-out invitation on January 9th — I don’t know about others.
-
Does anyone remember, in more detail than me, Macalester’s timeline for getting in touch about the next stage? (Or alternatively, has someone heard back already?)
-
Does anyone know whether Dartmouth (Social-Political, TT) has reached out to folks to schedule first round interviews?
-
@macanon, I was also interviewed and I think? they told me they were aiming to inform people by the 13th or 14th. I haven’t heard anything yet either, but hopefully we will in a couple of days!
-
Any news on Loyola Islamic philosophy position?
-
Utah Valley University (TT, epistemology) are scheduling virtual flyouts
-
@islander / @northeastern: which position was this?
-
@northeastern followup, virtual fly-outs have begun for the Northeastern tech ethics TT position, the one that is joint between philosophy and computer science https://philjobs.org/job/show/16166 The Northeastern teaching professor position, https://philjobs.org/job/show/16522 will be open until February 1st.
-
University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston is scheduling Zoom interviews for their TT bioethics position.
-
Any updates on Yale or Cambridge?
-
Loyola Islamic philosophy had first round interviews last week. Any news on finalists?
-
Any word on Loyola bioethics?
-
Anyone hear back from UChicago/Harper Schmidt Fellowship after receiving a request for more application materials back in November?
-
Has anyone heard from Loyola (bioethics) or Alabama (philosophy of medicine)?
-
@limbo Loyola bioethics first round interviews are occurring this week
@pufendorf–the Harper Schmidt fellowship info on the academic jobs wiki has a lot of updates: https://academicjobs.wikia.org/wiki/Humanities_and_Social_Sciences_Postdocs_2020-2021#University_of_Chicago_.28USA:IL.29_-_Collegiate_Assistant_Professor.2F_Harper_and_Schmidt_Fellow_-_Deadline:_Oct_16.2C_2020 -
Pfufendorf-no, I’m also waiting to get back from Chicago.
-
to hear back*
-
Thanks Anon (Chicago). Wait and see. Best of luck, to you and me. That rhymes, and I’m so cornyyyyy.
-
Thanks for letting me know, mac hopeful!
-
UNC, Chapel Hill (PPE, TT) has gone straight to virtual fly outs.
https://philjobs.org/job/show/16326 -
Thanks, little bird, for that helpful info!
-
Kindly rejection from UNC Chapel Hill (PPE)
-
Has anyone heard from the Johns Hopkins mental disorder postdoc?
-
I heard from a grapevine that the Johns Hopkins mental disorder post doc will likely have a short list by the end of the month.
-
@xmas spirit thanks so much for that info! Do you happen to know how they plan to narrow down the shortlist at that point, e.g. one round of interviews or two?
-
Sam Houston (Race/Science) is scheduling first-round interviews.
-
I know this has been asked before a couple of times, but had anyone heard anything about Carleton University?
-
Supermercado, would you mind sharing how you heard that from UNC PPE? No worries if not!
-
Carleton University has scheduled virtual flyouts.
-
Anyone else not heard anything yet from UNC-CH/PPE? Are they sending out rejections manually?
-
UBC (ethics) news?
-
You be see – nothing yet, they said they’ll contact longlisted people again mid January. Waiting too!
-
@doe: nothing yet for me. I assume they contacted the shortlist for fly outs and are contacting those who’ve not made an initial cut now, with people in between remaining in limbo. Of course it’s possible that they’re contacting everyone not on the fly out list with rejections and just taking their time. Past rejections from them on my end have been done manually by the search chair in the past, and the above note about the thoughtful rejection above suggests that this has not changed. Good luck either way!
-
@Ubc: Thanks!
-
PFO, brown university.
-
@doe @Lottery player n
I received a PFO from UNC PPE, too. IT was a kind, personally-addressed kind of note. My guess is he’s taking his time sending them. -
Anyone heard anything about the Leiden job (university lecturer practical philosophy)?
-
Macalester has sent at least one invitation for virtual flyouts.
-
Checking in again: anyone out there heard anything new or different from Florida Gulf Coast?
Any idea if they moved on to campus interviews? -
@anon, did Macalester just get in touch with you today?
-
still nothing from FGCU either
-
@anon also interested to hear when Macalester reached out. Anyone else who interviewed hear from them either way? I haven’t heard anything
-
@Macalester I’ve also yet to hear anything one way or another.
-
Nothing from FGCU for me neither.
-
Has anyone heard anything from Bard?
-
Rejection from Washington & Lee, saying the position has been filled.
-
Has anyone heard anything about the Oslo postdoc in the New Frontiers of Speech project?
-
Nothing from Bard yet, here.
-
Has anyone who interviewed with UW Evans School for the ethics and justice position been contacted yet? As I recall, the plan was for them to let us know one way or the other by mid-January.
-
I’m another person that hasn’t heard anything from Macalester.
-
For those of you who interviewed at Macalester and haven’t heard anything either, are you assuming it’s a rejection at this point?
-
Had anyone heard from Dartmouth regarding their TT position?
-
Macalester scheduled virtual campus visit 2 days ago
-
Dartmouth Society of Fellows is scheduling interviews
-
@Anon I bombed my interview with the UW Evans School for the ethics and justice, but haven’t heard from them either (one way or another) if that helps.
-
@Mac I’m assuming it’s a rejection and that they’re waiting to send a rejection email until they get confirmation from their initial invites. Would be happy to hear reason to think otherwise though!
-
Notification of being longlisted for the Polonsky Postdoc at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute.
-
Have people already been notified if they’re on a long list for the JHU mental disorder post doc?
-
Bard is scheduling interviews.
-
Has anyone heard from McCoy Family Center for Ethics in Society at Stanford (postdoc) or Embedded EthiCS Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard?
-
Can anyone confirm that Toronto has already conducted interviews for the continental position?
-
@ny do you know when the emails went out?
-
@bard I heard that one invitation was sent this past Friday.
-
As expected, Hamilton sent final PFOs saying the position has been filled. (I guess I didn’t have the votes.)
-
Princeton Desi postdoc has notified long listed candidates
-
Princeton contacted their long-list for the Desai Family Post-Doc. No request for anything additional.
-
@J. Belfort: I am not sure which stage of the process you are referring to, but St. Norbert has already conducted both preliminary interviews and virtual flyouts for the business ethics position.
-
Any more news from FGCU or UBC, or any news at all from Dartmouth, Yale, st Mary, CUHK, Tubingen, NYU Shanghai, Cambridge, Leiden, St Andrews, Leeds (all TT)?
-
Loyola Chicago – Bioethics position has scheduled virtual flyouts
-
St. Norbert has an offer out for the TT business ethics position.
-
In response to an enquiry, University of Alberta STS ( https://philjobs.org/job/show/15854 ) shared that the hiring committee will have its first meeting in a month to discuss a long-list of applicants.
-
@why??: Wow, incredible!
-
does anyone have news about Tübingen or a sense of the time line for that position?
-
Long listed at Lingnan
-
Wow, Alberta STS hasn’t even come up with a long-list?? It’s unbelievable..Well.. then I can be hopeful for a few more weeks.
-
Lingnan – is this for one of the TT positions (AOS Ethics or AOS Open)?
-
Awaiting: NYU Shanghai had first round interviews last week. I don’t know if they’ve moved to the next round.
-
Received the rejection letter from Macalester after first-round interview
-
PFO from Macalester after first round.
-
Re: Lingnan. Yes, it’s for the TT positions. I believe the long list is for both jobs.
-
I, too, applied to Macalester and heard nothing at all. Does this mean I’m still in the running or I’m so low that I’m not worth even a pfo…
-
Shortlisted at Hampden-Sydney College.
-
Bard has contacted its finalists and is completing first round interviews next week. “Campus visit” candidates will be notified by the end of the month.
-
Any word on Bence Nanay’s postdocs in Antwerp?
-
longlisted at Leeds
-
Looks like I’m so low that I don’t get a reply even here let alone a pfo. the market and its gatekeepers are so devilishly efficient in denigrating us…
-
University of Missouri post doc (faculty diversity) have contacted people they intend to interview
-
@Had it, it seemed like a more personalized rejection that was for the first round interviewees who didn’t make it to the virtual fly out round. They’d promised they’d get back to us by a certain time so I think it was a courtesy for that.
-
@Antwerp I have not heard anything about the Nanay post doc so far.
-
Mac, what you say confirms my suspicion. Those of us who do not make it to a short list are seen so low that we’re not even worth pfos.
-
@ had it -It’s definitely the toughest year they say. I think that checking this site makes rejection even more difficult because it feels like social rejection, rather than an impersonal machine of chance. Once you hear that so and so (even if anonymous) got an interview, you start feeling “uninvited”. It’s very hard to fight those feelings, but we must compartmentalize and move on.
-
Has anyone heard from Houston? a lot of the other places I’m waiting on I see chatter above, but not that one.
-
@Had it:
Don’t fret; they’ll probably send us a PFO sometime next autumn. -
Request for initial interview for the post-doc at Chicago’s Pozen Center for Human Rights
-
Stanford postdoc (the McCoy Family Center for Ethics in Society) are scheduling first-round interviews
-
@Had it: I hear you, the job market process is terrible. I feel it too.
-
@Had it: I hear you, the job market process is terrible. I feel it too.
-
@Had it: I hear you, the job market process is terrible. I feel it too.
-
I know candidates have been shortlisted for the Antwerp positions, not sure if offers have gone out.
-
@ <3
Thank you 🙂 it’s not easy being one of the untouchables… knowing there are others provides consolation even if just a little… -
@ ‘job market is hard’ I found out indirectly about a month ago that Houston filled the position. Would have been nice to receive any communication, especially given that they didn’t notify applicants when the search was cancelled last cycle, and especially given how unusual their timeline was.
@ ‘had it’ So much of this process is designed to make people who don’t get the job feel extremely small, and much of it can be mitigated with minimal courtesies from hiring committees. The fact that they can’t even spare a few minutes to send a completely generic rejection letter after hundreds of people spent their time personalizing their application materials says more about the hiring committee and the profession than it does about job applicants. Hang in there, many of us feel the same way. -
@ boop boop thanks! yeah, I didn’t hear anything either, so I appreciate you letting me know. It’s hard for me to understand why these places can’t just send a form email saying the position has been filled.
-
Any word on U Chicago (Harper Schmidt teaching fellowship), Baltimore City CC (open), Southeastern Oklahoma State (open), CC of Baltimore County (open), St Andrews (open lecturer), or St Andrews (ancient lecturer)?
-
@xmas spirit have you heard anything more about whether the JHU mental disorder post doc has contacted people on the short list yet?
-
Haven’t heard anything about the JHU mental disorder post doc.
-
Any update on the Notre Dame tech ethics job? Only my academia dot edu account is getting a LOT of ND pings right now, and I definitely wasn’t in the first round of interviews.
-
ND TEC recently notified finalists who passed the first round interview
-
@updating the spreadsheet
I haven’t heard from Southeaster Oklahoma State either. -
Any word on UConn cluster hire position after the update they sent on Jan 13?
-
According to the below listing, interviews went out today for the Harper-Schmidt Teaching Fellowships at U Chicago:
https://academicjobs.wikia.org/wiki/Humanities_and_Social_Sciences_Postdocs_2020-2021#University_of_Chicago_.28USA:IL.29_-_Collegiate_Assistant_Professor.2F_Harper_and_Schmidt_Fellow_-_Deadline:_Oct_16.2C_2020 -
Any word on the following?
Dartmouth TT (deadline 11/01/20)
Northeastern University’s cluster hire in race
Rhode Island School of Design’s (RISD) cluster hire in hire in race
Yale TT
George Mason TT -
PFO from Utrecht (bioethics)
-
PFO from Polonsky postdoc.
-
George Mason has begun to schedule first-round interviews.
-
Has anyone heard from the York perception post doc?
-
Any news about the NIH Bioethics Post-Doc? (Or am I being too impatient?)
-
@ ‘cross it off the spreadsheet’, on that wiki — which is indeed the place to look for those looking for info on the Harper Schmidt fellow positions — it is only someone reporting interview request for 2 of the non-philosophy humanities categories, so, that doesn’t mean that any philosophy interview requests or any of the other streams went out.
-
PFO from University of Toronto (TT PhilSci)
-
Tübingen is scheduling interviews.
-
@NIH Bioethics: Last year, I received a rejection from the NIH on March 12th. IIRC, they also had the same deadline last year as this year. While I don’t know what day they sent out acceptances, it’s probably still a bit too early to expect info, I assume.
-
@anon: Many thanks. I noticed on last year’s thread that there was word of a shortlist toward the end of January, which is why I thought there might be some news soon. Back to waiting, I guess. Best of luck 🙂
-
@another anon: Would you mind sharing which of the Tübingen positions you are referring to? The Kant/German Idealism one or the Machine Learning one? Thanks!
-
NIH should be sending interview invitations this week or early next week, and aiming to make offers by mid February.
-
@York: I have not heard anything about the York perception postdoc, but am also quite curious. The deadline was back in Nov.
-
PFO from Brown (Political Theory Project)
-
Yale has scheduled virtual flyouts for its applied ethics/social and political philosophy assistant prof. search.
-
PFO from Yale (applied ethics / social and political assistant prof).
-
Any word from Cambridge or St. Andrews?
-
PFO from Yale. I think it says something that I was ecstatic to get a rejection letter. So nice to hear anything whatsoever, compared to the rest of the universities I’m waiting on. Thank you, Yale!
-
PFO from Yale University.
-
Has anyone heard anything about the UNC Chapel Hill post doc?
-
Has anyone else not heard from Yale yet one way or the other?
-
Nothing on my end from UNC postdoc, Cambridge, or St Andrews. also received the Yale PFO.
-
Has anyone heard from Harvard (embedded ethics postdoc) or Bogazici University (TT, open)?
-
@Tübingen Apologies, I didn’t realize there were two. I meant the Kant/German Idealism one!
-
@another anon: Thanks!
-
Any word yet on Bard?
Any word on Cambridge (ethics or Pol phil)?
Any word on St. Mary’s? -
@Anon wondering- Back on 01/22/2021 at 10:12 AM “Bard” said Bard had scheduled interviews and would contact finalists by the end of the month
-
Has anyone heard from Lawrence?
-
Bard has notified finalists
-
Also wondering about Lawrence. It’s just over 2 weeks since their last scheduled first-round interview, and they told me at the interview to expect to hear back in 2 – 3 weeks.
-
@question I had a first-round interview with Lawrence and still haven’t heard back yet.
-
@grapevine do you know when the emails for virtual flyouts went out?
-
Has anyone heard back from Niagara University or Alabama?
-
pfo from bard, sort of a bizarre note
-
PFO from Bard
-
Anyone heard positively from Brown Political Theory Project? No PFO yet
PFO from Bard, Yale
UNC Chapel Hill PPE sends vague email about process. -
I had a first round for the UConn cluster hire and they said next week I should hear about second round interviews.
-
anon@ 4:26pm, did the Yale PFO come today or on 1/27?
Alabama (philosophy of medicine) has scheduled virtual fly outs. -
Where was this “cluster hire” advertised?
-
@anon and @Last chance! I was told I will hear from them by the end of January.
-
PFO from USC (society of fellows in the humanities). They shared that they got a staggering 1187 applications for the 5 fellowships they were awarding!
@anon @445 pm I received the Yale PFO on 1/27. -
USC Society of Fellows in the Humanities has notified semi-finalists.
-
PFO from Bard
-
Ahmedabad University is scheduling virtual flyouts.
-
@annie I too am wondering what this UConn cluster hire business is about. I don’t recall seeing it on philjobs.
-
for anyone wondering about FGCU, I heard secondhand (not from HR or the search committee) that they moved on to second round interviews and had notified someone during the second week of January.
i have never seen a school communicate so poorly with its interviewees. its pretty unfortunate and honestly, i’d go so far as disgraceful.
my basic understanding is the search committee’s hands are tied by hr policies about how they can communicate but honestly, i don’t care.
to just get radio silence a month and half after interviewing is disgraceful and to have to find out second hand that they moved on . . . uggh, nuff said. -
https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/17559
It’s bizarre that such a prominent department wouldn’t advertise this on philjobs, but maybe they had specific targets in mind and didn’t want to widely advertise? -
(Addition to my last comment: it’s less bizarre now that I looked carefully at the ad; it looks like for some reason it’s a single committee hiring all of these people, and neither of the chairs of the committee are (primarily) philosophers, so they probably just weren’t aware of philjobs.)
-
Has anyone heard from Georgia Southern University for the applied ethics position?
-
PFO for GA Southern applied ethics (maybe a month ago)
-
@XYZ: I’m not sure if you’re asking about first or second round interviews. Georgia Southern conducted first round interviews already; but, as far as I’m aware, hasn’t made any decisions yet regarding the second round.
-
I know someone who got an ‘on campus’ at Lawrence. Sorry.
-
@second-hand: ah, well. Best of luck to them!
-
Any word regarding GA Southern philosophy of race?
-
Anyone heard from the MIT postdoc, Harvard Embedded Ethics postdoc, UPenn Global Innovation postdoc, Rotman Institute postdoc, Wake Forest leadership postdoc, Cornell’s DLI postdoc, or Northeastern’s assistant teaching prof? Thanks!
-
ABC,
GA Southern has done a first round of interviews. Not sure if applicants have been contacted for virtual flyouts. -
@anon interesting! I’ve heard nothing at all (either way) from Georgia Southern (re: applied ethics). Is it possible they sent PFOs only to some people but not others? Are we noticing this with other jobs, too?
-
I know someone who got on campus for GA southern applied ethics.
-
Has anyone heard from the JHU philosophy of mental disorder postdoc or from NIH bioethics yet?
-
@anon I have not heard anything about the mental disorder post doc either, although someone on this thread a while back had heard they were expecting to have a shortlist by the end of January. Still hoping to hear back soon…
-
@ Tom: yes, and there is another post early on asking about where the Copenhagen Business School job was advertised and which no one answered—I also never saw and ad that job. I find it discouraging that people won’t take the time to answer these simple pleas.
-
Has anyone heard anything at all from UW-Evans School for the ethics and justice position, after first-round interviews? They said they’d be in touch (one way or the other) by mid-January, but I haven’t heard anything, nor seen any news on here about it. Very curious to know.
-
@Anon, I had a first-round interview with UW-Evans and haven’t heard back from them either.
-
@exasperated: same here
-
@Anon + exasperated: I’m in the same situation.
-
University of Mary has scheduled first-round interviews
-
Any information about the Pitt HPS post doc?
-
@VAP Life did University of Mary do that today? Or earlier last week? Thank you!
-
Anyone info about HKUST or CUHK?
-
any word from Cambridge or St. Andrews?
-
cambridge has scheduled virtual flyouts.
-
@also applied
This week, in my case. But I think other interview requests may have been sent out earlier. Don’t know how much earlier, how many, etc. Hope that helps! -
@cambridge thanks! do you know when that happened?
-
CUHK has scheduled virtual flyouts as well.
-
Any word about Dartmouth TT, Leiden, KU Leuven, Warwick, UCL (political theory), or Mount Joseph?
-
Any news about flyouts from UNC Wilmington? (prelim interviews were in mid dec)
-
@postdoc no. 2, flyouts were scheduled for UNC Wilmington.
-
Has anybody heard from St. Andrews (ancient)?
-
I’m sorry to tell you this, but UNC Wilmington has already invited people for the fly outs some time ago.
-
just found this site–sorry that some of this info is a bit late, and extra apologies if it’s already been covered and i missed it! UBC (ethics) scheduled virtual flyouts a few weeks ago. Harper-Schmidt says over email today that interviews for some positions have begun but the search process is still ongoing. anyone know whether UNC chapel hill (open) has made an offer yet, or scheduled flyouts?
-
Any word from Dartmouth regarding their tenure-track position?
The deadline was November 1st. -
@sleepless in seattle
Dartmouth seems to be in advance stages for their TT position (from an indirect comment about what they hope for next year). -
PFO from Leeds
-
WTF is going on at HKU? They’ve just sent a weird and vague email stating that “In light of new circumstances, and after extensive discussions with the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and myself, as Head of the School of Humanities, the Department of Philosophy has decided to reframe its ongoing searches and restart the search process for this post.”
-
st. andrews has scheduled virtual flyouts.
-
Shortlisted at St. Andrews (ancient).
-
@st andrews Was this for the ancient position or the two open positions?
-
@anon: UNC-CH has had flyouts for the open position.
-
Any word about the University of Edinburgh Chancellor’s Fellowship ( https://philjobs.org/job/show/16042 )?
-
Anyone knows what happened to the phil med search at the University of Alabama?
-
@Postdoc #3:
Unless they have already contacted (only) short-listers, the Edinburgh Chancellor’s Fellowship posting said they would be scheduling interviews “in February”, and that they would be trying to give two weeks notice, so if they are on schedule, they should be contacting shortlisted candidates in the next ten days or so. -
@Alabama someone earlier in the thread reported that they’d scheduled virtual fly outs for the phil med position
-
@ dartanon
Does ‘advanced stages’ mean they are just about to schedule first-round interviews?
Or does ‘advanced stages’ mean they are at, or past the point of, scheduling second-round interviews? -
@Sleepless in Seattle
It was my impression that they’re on second-round interviews, if not further (the comment was about specific people(?) they hoped to hire for next year, I think…hoping I didn’t misunderstand!) -
PFO from Medical College of Wisconsin
-
PFO from Pitt philosophy of science post doc
-
Has anyone received word regarding these two cluster hires in race:
Rhode Island School of Design (RISD)
Northeastern University -
Stanford postdoc (Ethic in Society center) have made offers
-
PFO from Lawrence
-
edinburgh has made virtual flyout offers.
-
Shortlisted for Bence Nanay’s Antwerp postdoc.
-
Late to the party, but here are some PFOs I have gotten:
Bard College
St. Bonaventure University
Georgia Southern University
Jain Family Institute
Utah Valley University
Jain Family Institute
Baltimore City Community College
University of North Carolina Wilmington
Georgia College & State University
Sabanci
University of Otago
Hamilton College
Virginia Tech
Villanova University
University of British Columbia -
Has anyone heard from Western Carolina University?
-
@Freedom=nothing, thanks for the update. Two questions, if I may:
When was the Baltimore City CC PFO dated?
Does “Georgia […] State University” refer to the Georgia State (ancient, TT) job? Thanks! -
@Freedom=nothing,
I received an HR email from WCU about a week ago saying that I had met the minimum qualifications for the position, and that, consequently, my application was forwarded to (I assume) the search committee. Nothing beyond that. -
@freedom=nothing else to lose
Got a procedural sounding email from Western Carolina U that my application had moved to the next review stage. Email came a week or so ago. -
Has anyone heard from Dartmouth Mellon Postdoc?
-
@well ok
Dartmouth’s Mellon Postdoc invited respective departments to interview shortlisted candidates; the humanities center will meet next week to discuss. I suppose they’ll make offers the following week or so -
Has anyone received word regarding Dartmouth’s Guarini Dean’s Postdoc in Latin American Latino and Caribbean Studies?
-
I don’t understand this info about dartmouth post doc. So they contacted people alreadg or what? What is the humanities center?? They will make offers? So they already contacted people?
-
@xmas spirit
Basically, yes, they already interviewed people and should be making decisions next week.
The Dartmouth mellon postdoc is run by their humanities center and open to fields other than philosophy. The center longlists candidates, asks the relevant departments (who would host the postdoc) to interview them, and will make final decisions partly based on interview reports. -
Did anything end up happening yet with the Johns Hopkins foundations or mind or mental disorder postdocs?
-
Haven’t heard anything about Hopkins post doc. This whole process is fking awful
-
@Xmas Spirit
From what I gather, Dartmouth’s Mellon postdoc differs from the Guarini Dean’s postdoc.
I’ve not seen any info reported regarding the Guarini Dean’s postdoc. -
To prevent this thread from becoming even more unwieldy than it already is, two requests:
1. Keep in mind there is a separate thread called ‘job market discussion’ where some of these conversations may be more appropriate.
2. Please try and read the thread before inquiring about the status of a job because chances are good there has already been someone who shared an update about what you’re asking.
Thanks! -
vanilla form pfo from Dartmouth (Phil/govt TT).
200 applicants.
Curious to learn about the patterns of these hires. -
@lottery player n
By “these hires,” do you mean this year’s? Why do you (already) think there might be patterns to it? -
Has anyone heard back from the Georgia State philosophy of education/ancient post? It was the first of two job ads from Georgia State.
-
If we’re not going to discuss it further here, can I also end by asking Originally fromHK to elaborate on the other job market thread? I too am interested in working there. Any thoughts in particular about departments other than HKU?
-
PFO from Dartmouth (political, they report > 200 applications)
PFO from Missouri (Faculty diversity Postdoc, they report 477 applications, a record for them)
UNCW is in the final stages: they are interviewing their final finalist (out of, I believe 4) tomorrow 2/9 and hope to make an offer shortly after.
University of Mary may still be reviewing applications: I received a call late Friday letting me know I’ve advanced to the next stage. -
PFO from York University perception post doc
-
Virtual flyout/invitation to interview for Edinburgh’s Chancellor’s Fellow at the Centre for Technomoral Futures ( https://philjobs.org/job/show/16042 ). Had to turn it down because of a conflict — their timing is totally inflexible — so hopefully they can offer it to someone else. Clear your calendars for Feb 17th and 18th …
-
Harvard is scheduling first-round interviews for their Embedded EthiCS post-doc
-
Does anyone know about the Harvard Embedded EthiCS job posted today? Isn’t this job exactly the same as the earlier one? https://philjobs.org/job/show/16158
I wonder what’s going on… -
@perplexed – The new Embedded EthiCS posting is for a slightly different role – the unique responsibilities for the new position are:
“serving as liaison with the NCSoft Postdoctoral Fellow at MIT; serving as liaison with other developing Embedded EthiCS teams; helping to develop and run a workshop for schools interested in developing an Embedded EthiCS program” -
@monday not so fun day
Regarding U of Mary: did this call occur after your first-round interview? Or were they calling to schedule a first-round interview? -
@anon – Thank you for the clarification!
-
@not free yet
Baltimore City CC emailed me Jan 1st.
The Georgia State was an applied ethics position. -
Did anyone get a PFO from St. Andrews (ancient)?
-
Does anyone know if the Pitt postdoc made offers? I saw that someone reported they got a PFO from them a few days ago. But I heard nothing, so I wonder if anyone knows more about the situation.
-
@VAP Life In my case, this call was to schedule a first-round interview, which I have not yet had. I know others are at a different stage of the process, but I was meaning to let people know that they may still be adding to their list for the first-round.
-
@weird There are two problems with HK academia. The first is the top down administrative style that is highly problematic for someone coming from American academia. The second is the national security law. I’m from HK, but unfortunately, see no possibility of returning, which may color my view of jobs there.
Also, keep in mind to not believe anything you are told that is not in your contract, if you do take a job there. -
Has anyone had any contact from College of Charleston yet?
-
ethics and epistemology postdoc at helsinki has contacted a longlist of ten
-
Has anyone heard from Rotman Institute (scientific practice, social epistemology, social justice, etc.)?
-
PFO Warwick TT
-
Re Copenhagen Business School – sorry for not replying earlier, I don’t visit this website too often. I found the announcement for that job on their website, in English.
I’ve now discovered that the Ass Prof position has been offered to a person who NOT ONLY did her PhD at their department and school, but ALSO her postdoc there. She has been there since 2011. It looks like they had an internal candidate for this post from the start, and that (to put it mildly) the committee was biased, or (to put it more bluntly) it was a fake search. I can’t believe how much time and nerves I’d wasted prepping for interviews with them and getting my hopes. (So much for their statement that they’re striving to make the school more international and attract faculty with prestigious, foreign degrees.) -
Anyone heard from the Berlin postdoc in ‘Human Abilities’?
-
I had a job in HK until recently. I mostly agree with Originally from HK about the downsides. (I’d also add that the pollution can be miserable). But there are definitely upsides too:
HK is a great, world-class city. Excellent food, nice people, pleasant weather, and (surprisingly to me when I first arrived) lots of beautiful nature. Jobs can be very comfortable: mine had a reasonable teaching load, good salary, little admin. Although the cost of living is high (especially housing), the salary and low taxes more than make up for it; I managed to save a high proportion of my income without living especially frugally. The philosophy community is small but friendly, and HK has managed to attract some good people recently, so there are reasons to be optimistic about its trajectory.
If anyone has more specific questions, I’d be happy to talk over email (danielwaxman@gmail.com). -
Any news from the Colby VAP?
Has anyone heard anything about the Postdoc in Cognitive Science of Values with Tania Lombrozo at Princeton? -
Has anyone heard about the post-doc at Chicago, for the Law and Philosophy fellow?
-
College of Charleston is scheduling first-round interviews.
I got a personalized rejection email for the JHU philosophy of mental disorder postdoc on Monday, so I imagine they will contact interviewees very soon (if they haven’t already).
Has anyone heard from NIH? -
Has anyone heard from Durham, UCL, KU Leuven, Oklahoma State, Western Carolina, Groningen (Kant postdoc), or TU Munich?
-
Has anyone heard about the King’s College University (Canada) VAP?
-
@wondering, the Lombrozo lab began interviewing candidates the week of Jan 25th, but whoever gets nominated also has to make it through the Princeton Center for Human Values bureaucracy, which could take a few weeks.
-
Anyone heard from: Leiden, Johns Hopkins Hecht-Levi postdoc, or NYU bioethics faculty fellow?
-
@DisappointedCBS
Thanks so much for answering. I am so sorry. Ordinarily I would say that there isn’t quite enough evidence to conclude that (although likely on it’s own considering) it was a sham ad. But the fact that it wasn’t more widely advertised in conjunction with what you say basically confirms it I’m afraid. Absolutely unforgivable behavior. 🙁 I know sometimes university admin requires positions to be advertised publicly but I cannot believe it is impossible to use subtext to make this clear to external applicants. -
Does anyone know whether Pitt is conducting interviews for the post doc or if someone was offered the fellowship without the interview?
Thanks, -
Anyone news on the NIH Bioethics post-doc?
-
Pitt postdoc made an offer today. No prior interviews.
-
Is the person getting an offer from pitt likely accepting it? Thanks
-
Anybody hear anything from Bilkent University (in relation to this job: https://philjobs.org/job/show/16218)?
-
Northeastern (teaching professor in information ethics) is scheduling first-round interviews.
-
PFO from Johns Hopkins Mental Disorder Post Doc. Fk, really wanted that one 🙁
-
Has anyone heard from Utah Valley University yet in regard to either the asian phil or epistemology position (post final round interviews)?
-
@Anonymousmaybe
The think you included seems to not be working, but I applied to Bilkent and have not yet heard anything. -
@which search did they decide first: I think Utah Valley are supposed to decide on both searches by the end of this week
-
PFO from Georgia Southern’s philosophy of race TT search.
-
Durham University is informing long-listed candidates for Assistant Professor in Environmental Philosophy (PHIL21-52).
-
Has anyone gotten an offer from Antwerp in connection with Nanay’s postdocs?
-
antwerp: yes, at least one person has accepted one of the postdocs (but I have no idea if they are staggered, etc.)
-
NYU (Bioethics, AP/Faculty Fellow) has notified people on their longlist.
UMass Lowell (AI/Ethics, Postdoc) has scheduled interviews. -
@Freedom=nothing left to lose
Thanks. Here’s the functioning link for the Bilkent job:
https://philjobs.org/job/show/16218
If anybody has updates about that job and can share them here, I’ll be supremely appreciative. And of course I will share info here when/if I have it as well. -
Has anyone heard anything about the University of North Carolina diversity post doc? Or the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study faculty fellowship on “resilience”?
-
@xmas spirit: I also haven’t heard anything from UNC diversity postdoc and don’t know anything about their timeline unfortunately. If others have insight would love to hear!
-
Does anyone know whether St. Andrews has a shortlist yet for the two Lecturer positions (AOS: Open)?
(I know that finalists for the Ancient position have already been contacted, but I haven’t seen anything here about the other lectureships.) -
Anyone heard anything from St. Mary’s in Nova Scotia?
-
Helsinki (ethics/epistemology, postdoc) has scheduled interviews.
-
Any news on second-round/on-campus interview decision from LSU?
-
@patient St. Andrews has notified folks on the short list for the open positions– I heard they’re conducting interviews etc. this week
-
@UK: Thanks for the info! (It’s good to know.)
-
(Reasonably personable) PFO from Leiden (University Lecturership in Practical Philosophy)
-
If anyone would like actual information about the HKU posts or working in Hong Kong more generally, please feel free to contact me. Originally fromHK’s speculations are simply that, and incorrect. The funding has not been pulled (by the dean or anyone else), and a new search will begin very soon. I don’t think my department is in disarray, nor that this forum is a helpful place for spreading rumors.
-
Anyone heard about the Warwick job?
-
Any news on the Colby VAP?
-
(nice/respectful) PFO from University College London (Lecturer in Political Theory)
-
Warwick sent PFOs last week
-
@Anon, so quickly? The posting was just like two weeks ago.
-
(nice/respectful) PFO from University of King’s College (Limited Term position)
-
Yeah I got a rejection on Feb 9th from Warwick. Good luck to you!😊
-
Just confirming that I also got a quick-turnaround rejection from the Warwick job. sigh
-
Has anyone heard anything more about the Desai post-doc since they contacted the long-list?
-
Has anyone heard … anything … from JHU Hecht-Levi/Faden Bioethics Fellowship? Or Cleveland Clinic (second rounds)?
-
re: Desai, I haven’t heard anything new but guessing soon since Gideon said they’d make the decision by mid-February.
-
@anon – I haven’t heard about the Desai since being contacted for the long-list.
-
Has anyone heard anything about the postdocs at the Rotman Institute of Philosophy in Canada?
-
Has anyone heard from Western Carolina since that initial “you’ve met the qualifications to be passed along for consideration” email?
-
Any news on the Penn MindCORE? Did those already go out?
-
Re: UW-Evans (Applied Ethics and Justice). I emailed the contact person and was told that “at this time we have moved forward in the process. I anticipate formal notice will be given to applicants in the next week regarding selection/non-selection.”
-
@WTAF
Cleveland Clinic made an offer
I got a PFO from JHU Hecht-Levi/Faden Bioethics Fellowship when I asked what their timeline was. -
@Disco2 Any chance you know if they took/are taking the Clev Clinic offer?
-
St Mary’s is scheduling interviews.
-
@UW-Evans thanks for passing this along! Much appreciated.
-
Could I ask if the person(s) (who can remain anonymous) who received the offer from Pitt Center of Philosophy of Science post-doc plans to accept the offer? Or what other offers that person is waiting on?
I was notified that I was an “alternate”, so any information about the relevant probabilities would be helpful. -
Anyone heard from Cornell’s Digital Life Initiative Postdoc, Upenn’s Global Innovation Postdoc, or Wake Forest’s Leadership Postdoc? Thanks.
-
PFO from Niagara University, which was no surprise seeing as this is the first time I’ve heard from them since I applied!
-
@WCU hopeful
I also got that email and have not heard anything since.
The waiting game is killing me. I sent out 56 applications this year, and have only heard back from about 18 so far (mostly rejections, 2 emails that said “we are working on it and you didn’t get cut yet, so sit tight.”, and one shortlist). -
Any updates on any of the following? Thank you in advance:
Boston College (teach), Santa Clara U (lecturer), Mount St. Joseph U (TT, open)? -
Has Durham University scheduled interviews for the moral/social/political position?
-
pfo from st olaf
-
UNCW has made an offer which has been accepted
-
Any one hear from Belmont Abbey in NC? -Thanks
-
@molly I haven’t heard from Belmont Abbey either.
@curious I also haven’t heard from Durham. -
Just a quick moderator’s note on these job-market threads: I have noticed an increasing number of comment submissions recently that aim to disparage or spread rumors about particular individuals or institutions. I understand job-market frustrations very much. However, this blog, given its stated mission, is not the place for this kind of thing.
Commenters may of course discuss what they did or did not like about, say, a particular rejection notice for example. But I will not approve comments that just seek to vent disparaging comments about this or that institution or search committee being ‘the worst’ or ‘awful’, or whatever.
Again, I entirely understand the desire to engage in this sort of thing – but this blog isn’t the place for it, and I won’t approve these kinds of comments. Thanks! -
Marcus,
Fair enough.
But the communications in question, from the school in question, were exceptionally bad. That’s why I attempted to post the comment. I have never given these things a second thought. Until now. -
@WTAF Unfortunately, I don’t know
-
University of Mary is scheduling in-person flyouts.
-
Thanks Anon – I get it. I endured some shockingly poor treatment during my time on the market as well. So I totally understand the urge to vent and/or call out bad actors. This blog just isn’t the place for it. I appreciate you understanding.
-
Rhodes was an inside hire, right?
-
Enough, my read of the Rhodes job posting is that it’s just announcing a Spring 2021 VAP position. (The posting doesn’t include a rank, and the CV indicates only the VAP.)
-
anon’s response to Enough is correct. If you look closely at the recent appointment announcement from Rhodes it is categorized as ‘junior/other’ rather than ‘junior/tenure-track’. So it’s announcing the person’s VAP.
There is no reason to suspect that Rhodes is doing any inside hiring. -
Thank you for the correction, I hope you’re right…
-
Any news about cambridge??
-
I am in a unique position to confirm that anon (2/20/2021 at 9:00am) and hire me outside are correct. Rest easy, Enough.
-
What does VAP mean?
-
VAP = visiting assistant professor
-
thanks, NH. And am I right that this means a fixed-term teaching position that pays much better than an adjunct?
-
though to follow up on the rhodes thing, even though the recent hire thing on philjobs may have been for a spring 2021 VAP, what stops one from thinking that the person hired for that position won’t be a favorite for Fall 2021 TT position given the description of the candidate they’re looking for and VAP’s AOS and AOC?
Just a thought.
Of course one shouldn’t waste time worrying about such things and Marcus has often pointed out that its wrong to assume an internal candidate will get a job, but all the same, it’s kind of a bad look to announce a recent VAP hire that just happens to have the exact same qualifications as the TT position you concurrently announced. -
has anyone heard any updates or an updated timeline re Princeton Desai?
anything from UNC post-doc?
is anyone planning on declining the Bersoff? -
Any news on the Arizona State bioethics lecturer position? Thanks.
-
@waiting4ever: I haven’t heard any updates about the Desai since the info about being on the long list, back in January. Also nothing about the UNC post-doc.
-
Any news re: the Boston College job?
-
Princeton Desai has made an offer.
-
Does anybody have any information about the two Harvard embedded ethics postdocs?
-
Any news on any of the following? Thank you in advance:
Rotman Institute (postdocs, PhilSci), Bilkent (TT, Turkey), and Boğaziçi (TT, Turkey)? -
@what todo, Bilkent has moved into second-round interviews, not sure whether they’ve made an offer.
-
Polite PFO from Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics (Harvard Ethics post doc) https://philjobs.org/job/show/15882
-
PFO from Loyola (TT, bioethics) that ended with an encouragement to check out an HR link to other job listings and “qualifications” at Loyola, which seemed like a weird and impersonal touch. A good way to make it clear that the hiring committee itself didn’t bother to craft the rejection letters, I guess.
-
PFOs from Princeton Desai and Harvard Safra.
-
@bilkent, thanks for the update!
-
@hopeful – the first Harvard embedded ethics postdoc invited interviews (I reached out to them for an answer). I’m still waiting on any news regarding the second one myself.
-
Anyone hear from Durham or Manchester?
-
Muhlenberg VAP has sent out first-round interview invites.
-
western Carolina PFO
-
@anon-When did you hear from Western Carolina?
-
today; i got a response to an e-mail i had sent inquiring about the search:
“The committee chose ten semi-finalists, and I regret to inform you that you were not amongst them. Though it might sound cliché, the competition was extraordinarily tough. We had over 200 applicants, many of whom are very, very strong.”
I suppose its possible they haven’t notified the semi-finalists yet. -
Longlisted by Durham’s Assistant Professor in Political Theory.
-
Anyone hear anything about Oklahoma State?
-
Has anyone heard from Georgia State Perimeter? They had two TTs and a Lecturer position.
-
Any update on the Islamic Philosophy position at Loyola?
-
Polonsky Fellowship – invitation to the final-stage interview
-
PFOs from Carleton and both Roots of Responsibility postdocs
-
PFO from Carleton
-
About Western Carolina — has anyone gotten one of those “you’re one of the 10 semi-finalists” emails from them yet?
-
PFO from Carleton.
@Anonaman- I have not gotten a “you’re one of the 10 semi-finalists” email yet. I have also not gotten a pfo. My assumption is that they haven’t sent out mass PFOs because the previous person who posted about this said they got their PFO after emailing WC. I decided to email them and ask about the status of my application. I will update when I know more. -
@Anonaman, I haven’t gotten a PFO from WC, nor have I gotten notice that I’m a semi-finalist. I did make it through the initial cut a couple weeks ago. But I have gotten very few interviews or PFOs this year so I think people just don’t like to email me.
-
@doin OK
I heard from Oklahoma State the following on 2/16: “Dr. Gelfand asked me to update you and let you know that the department will be meeting in early March to do a final review of applications and select finalists for first round of interviews.” -
@adrift @circlingthedrain was the Carleton PFO a form letter type of email?
-
@ doin OK Oklahoma State sent out an email saying they’ll meet in early March to select candidates for first round interviews.
-
@also applied, it was a pretty formulaic pfo sent by the dept. administrator. Loads of applicants, hard decisions, sorry we couldn’t give better news, etc.
-
Thanks to both of you! I wonder why I don’t ever get these emails that all other applicants get…
-
@doin OK – you might want to check your spam / junk folder. Form letters and such can sometimes wind up in there.
-
I still haven’t heard either way about the JHU Hecht-Levi postdoc. Does anyone know if they’ve made decisions yet?
(A previous commenter mentioned they had received a PFO after emailing the JHU folks, so I emailed JHU as well about a week or 10 days ago, but have so far heard nothing.) -
Interview for McCoy Center for Ethics at Stanford.
-
Anyone heard from St. Andrews?
-
How about Rhodes Memphis?
-
PFO from Groningen.
-
Someone a few weeks ago had news on U of Alberta (phil sc and tech) saying that they were going to meet in late February. Anyone got other news?
-
Has anyone heard from Mount St. Joseph? I’m assuming it’s normal to take a bit, their dept seems small…
-
@bc first round interview request from Boston College came through Wednesday of this week
-
@ Alberta? I haven’t heard anything from them either. They let everyone wait forever. I don’t think I would be long- or short-listed for the job. But still, this is very disrespectful.
-
Offer made for UMass Lowell postdoc in war/AI. Search closed for Georgia Southern. Interview requests sent for Western Carolina.
-
Has anyone heard anything from Penn MindCORE?
What about the second Harvard embedded ethics postdoc? -
@paranoid_but_informed did WCU send an email about interviews, or just make the withdrawals from Interfolio? Thanks!
-
@Paranoid also: WCU sent an email. Sounds like they had 200 apps, but no word on how many semi-finalists they’ve selected or if they’ve contacted them. If your letters were solicited via Interfolio, it’s a good sign.
-
PFO UW Evans School (Ethics & Justice). Search process “concluded.”
-
@Alberta & @open sesame my guess is that Alberta had to wait for the line to be funded (or not), and the provincial government just released the university budget today. 11% cut from 2 years ago. So my guess is that nothing disrespectful is happening and whether or not the search moves forward will be out of the department’s hands.
-
PFO from UNC Faculty Diversity Postdoc.
-
Sesame and postdoc3: thanks!
-
@Ohio, I’m not sure what the deal with Mount St. Joseph University and their job is. They ran basically the same job ad last year, no one reported hearing back from them here (unless I missed something), and they didn’t respond to my email(s) requesting an update.
I applied again this year and, again, haven’t heard anything from anyone. -
Has anyone received any positive information from the UNC faculty diversity postdoc? I haven’t heard anything from them, including the PFO
-
Santa Clara renewable term lecture position — just got a rejection email.
-
PFO from Santa Clara (https://philjobs.org/job/show/16418).
-
Interview request from UW-Superior (lecturer position). Also, has anyone heard from Southeastern Oklahoma State?
-
Has anyone been contacted about interviews for the Brown Political Theory Project?
-
Wondering if anyone with a first round at st. Bonaventure has heard back about a second
-
PFO from JHU Hecht-Levi post-doc
-
Hi Anxiety, Would you be willing to share where the UW Superior job was advertised? I don’t remember seeing it (but perhaps I did and just forgot). Thanks in advance.
-
@anon Re: PFO Hecht-Levi: When did you get that? I have still heard nothing. Maybe they lost my app.!? Has anyone gotten a Hecht-Levi interview?
Also: Cleveland Clinic is still deliberating. -
Any news from NIH?
-
@Anon: I got the PFO from JHU Hecht-Levi yesterday. It was a form rejection from Interfolio. All it said was, “Thank you for your interest in the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics Hecht-Levi Fellowship Program. We have received an overwhelming number of highly qualified applicants this year, resulting in a difficult selection process. Unfortunately, we are unable to extend an offer for a position to you at this time for the 2021-2022 academic year of the Hecht-Levi Fellowship.”
So, no indication here they’ve already made a final offer. They could still be deliberating, and I was just in the first batch of rejections. -
PFO from Penn State Berks…haven’t heard from St. Bonaventure about second round interview
-
I too have not yet heard anything regarding the Hecht-Levi, so I doubt that they lost your (our) applications.
-
Has anyone heard back from the University of Calgary ethics position?
-
I haven’t heard anything from Calgary yet, but on Philjobs the deadline was pushed back untilearly March, I don’t remember the exact date.
-
Thought I’d put it out there that my PFO from the UNC Chapel Hill post doc was actually filtered into spam by Gmail! So worth checking your spam if you’re waiting on them
-
PFO from Lawrence University of Wisconsin (https://philjobs.org/job/show/15702).
-
MindCore rejected me 🙁
-
@Annie, the UW Superior post was advertised here: https://philjobs.org/job/show/16554
As maybe you know, PhilJobs lets users search for expired ads using the ‘more search options tab’ in the search bar on the left side of the screen when you’re using the browse jobs ad. -
PFO from NYU Shanghai
-
Calgary wrote me this week to let me know they had added a document I sent separately (by email) to my file, so I’d guess they’re still reviewing applications.
-
PFO from Carolina Postdoctoral Program for Faculty Diversity. (Fairly nice email, was sorted into spam so may want to check there if you’re waiting on that!)
-
@superior
I didn’t. Thanks for that, I’m grateful. -
Has anyone who interviewed first-round for the Northeastern AI Ethics teaching job heard back about a second round?
-
@anon SBU, St. Bonaventure reached out for the second round of interviews on Feb 15th. Sorry.
-
PFO from Durham (Assistant Professor in Moral, Social and Political Philosophy)
-
Longlisted at Durham (Assistant Professor in Moral, Social, and Political Philosophy)
-
PFO from UNC-Chapel Hill (Asst Prof Position)
-
Has anyone heard anything from the MIT postdoc? (NC Ethics of Technology Fellowship)
-
@Anon – I wrote MIT in early February and they still had not sent out interviews. They were hoping to make progress by the end of Feb. Not sure if they did or not, but I have not heard anything either.
-
Uninformative, form pfo from Durham philsci.
-
Has anyone heard anything about Rotman Institute (Western Ontario) postdocs or timeline? e.g. has anyone gotten a request for letters? [https://philjobs.org/job/show/16142%5D Thanks!
-
I was long listed today for the Harvard Embedded EthiCS postdoc. It’s unclear whether it was for the application due 12/31, or the application due 2/16.
-
Berman Institute’s (at Johns Hopkins) Hecht-Levi Fellowships accepted by two candidates. PFOs forthcoming.
-
“assistant professorship in applied ethics, with a focus on technology, at the University of Twente” has scheduled interviews for longlisted candidates.
-
Has anyone heard from Oklahoma State? I think they said they’d be meeting the first week of March.
-
Has anyone has heard from Bayreuth or Groningen?
-
@Anon at 11:02 PM: got a PFO from Groningen in the last few days of February. They said that they had selected some finalists at that point.
-
@Pottery Lottery: I haven’t heard of anything either from the institute. The same goes for my two other peers.
-
Oklahoma State is scheduling first round interviews.
-
PFO from Belmont Abbey College.
-
WCU is doing first round interviews.
-
@akraticeleatic
Can I ask when you heard about WCU? -
@Freedom: My first-round interview with WCU was last week. My understanding is they completed all interviews as of last Friday, March 5th.
-
Has anyone heard about round 2 interviews for the tech ethics teaching position at Northeastern?
-
Any word yet on second round interviews for Boston College (professor of the practice/pulse program)? I know it’s probably early but the anxiety is real…
-
University of Florida (TT, ethics and AI; https://philjobs.org/job/show/16626) has scheduled at least some first-round interviews
-
PFO from the ‘recruitment team’ at St. Andrews.
https://philjobs.org/job/show/16278 -
PFO from NIH Bioethics postdoc.
-
PFO Muhlenberg VAP
-
@sahpa: When did the PFO come through? I haven’t heard one way or the other from NIH.
-
@sahpa, did the NIH PFO indicate where they were in their search process? I haven’t heard from them yet so I’m curious.
-
@sahpa: did the PFO from NIH include any information about where they are with their search?
I haven’t heard one way or the other yet and I’m starting to worry they lost my application or something. -
Has anyone heard anything about the Hogwarts job? I can’t tell if the Defense of the Dark arts job is an inside hire?
-
Official PFO from WCU.
-
PFO from WCU.
-
@Losing all hope & @SD: Had you previously received PFOs from WCU? Or was this after a first-round interview?
-
@paranoid_but_informed: I didn’t get an interview, but had not received a PFO either until today.
-
@paranoid…
Same. I didn’t get an interview and just got my PFO today. -
Uninformative hr pfo from St. Andrews senior lecturer position.
-
In answer to the followup questions about the NIH postdoc: I was given no additional information whatsoever. A PFO in the truest sense. Sorry I can’t be of more help.
Received it yesterday, when I posted my comment here. -
any news about the Toronto Continental job?
-
@wannateach i too have had radio silence since the first round northeastern tech ethics teaching position
-
@what_up The final talk for the Toronto Continental job took place on March 5. Not sure if a decision has been made yet
-
The College of St. Scholastica (ethics/value theory broadly construed) is scheduling first round interviews.
-
PFO Georgia State (ancient). Search completed.
-
PFO Bristol Philosophy and Logic (ad has been scratched so I can’t link it).
-
Any update from WCU after first round interviews?
-
@One more shot: I had a first-round interview at WCU, but no updates. Curious if anyone else has.
-
Same question for UMary. Did anyone with an interview there hear anything later? Or at Dixie State?
-
@ghosted I had an on-campus (in-person) flyout at UMary and was believe (but am uncertain) that they’ve made the offer and it’s been accepted (and not to me).
-
@ghosted
I had a first-round interview with U Mary in the first week of February. They told me that their process was moving quickly, and that I should expect to hear from them “soon.”
~6 weeks later and I haven’t heard anything. So…. I’m assuming that I’m no longer in the running? IDK, pretty frustrating. -
Any updates on the Durham Philosophy of Science job? I didn’t get the PFO someone mentioned earlier, but haven’t heard anything either way
-
University of Mary has had at least one fly out already, I assume more.
-
Whatever,
There were two Durham philsci jobs.
One (basically open rank) has been longlisted. If you applied for that job and haven’t heard back, then you’ve apparently been longlisted.
The other is more junior. As far as I know, longlisting hasn’t taken place yet. Sucks, given that the deadline was back in January, but Durham is doing a tonne of hiring right now, so they are probably busy. -
how many continental positions U of Toronto was hiring for, anybody knows? was it 1 or 2 in the end?
-
PFO st andrews ancient
-
First round interview with WCU here also, but, like the others, no update. The hiring committee was supposed to meet Friday of last week to discuss finalists.
-
Has anyone heard about Rotman Institute (Western Univ.) postdocs? The deadline was mid January.
-
@forget-me-not, I reached out to Rotman, and they said that the faculty has narrowed down the applications; final decisions have not yet been made; and they are not hiring in foundations of physics this year. No further time-line updates.
-
@Rutroh Rotman, thanks for the update! I really appreciate it 🙂
-
Dixie State has made an offer (for their 2-year position).
-
Durham junior philosophy of science job is finishing longlisting.
-
WCU has selected and notified two finalists. (I’m not one of them.)
-
PFO: University of Manchester (https://www.jobs.manchester.ac.uk/displayjob.aspx?jobid=19524)
-
PFO from Manchester (“engaged philosophy” lecturer post)
-
Finalist for UW-Superior
-
Arizona (career track, PPE) has scheduled interviews.
-
Mercyhurst is scheduling first round interviews.
-
PFO, LSU (TT, ancient)
-
PFO from LSU and Georgia Southern University.
-
PFO from Cambridge (two university lecturer positions)
-
I haven’t been able to find any news on Rhodes. Anyone heard anything?
-
Does anyone know if University of Toronto Scarborough has made an offer yet?
-
News on Western Kentucky (TT; epistemology, metaphysics, phil science) anyone?
-
Applied to both Rhodes and Western Kentucky. Haven’t heard anything from either…
-
Anyone heard from Colby (Epistemology/Phil Science VAP)?
-
PFO from Cambridge (“2 lecturers”) and another from the Hecht-Levi fellowship
-
Has anyone heard from Society for Applied Philosophy on the
Short term postdoctoral research grants scheme 2021?
https://www.appliedphil.org/funding/sap-short-term-postdoctoral-research-grants-2021/
for
— 15 February 2021, for awards to commence on 1 April 2021.
And it is like 10 days before the commencement. -
Things are winding down a bit so I wanted to thank everyone on this thread for their kindness and openness throughout the process. You have made a tough year easier to bear, and I am grateful. And best of luck to everyone who still has applications outstanding!
-
I’m not feeling great about the fact that people can get both (i) super competitive fellowships, and (ii) tt jobs that they defer for one year. People who create these fellowships shouldn’t allow that esp during the years that there are like 10 things total available, but then again they don’t care.
-
Hong Kong Baptist University is scheduling first-round interviews for its TT position in ethics.
-
@anonymous, re: tenure track deferral:
Do you have evidence that that’s happening much this year? Genuine question. -
@anonymous/@Are People deferring
I would also be interested to hear about why you think this (also, genuine question). -
has st. scholastica scheduled round 2 interviews yet?
-
Both people who got the nyu post doc fellowship also have tt jobs lined up (one is Berkley, another in Australian something university).
It’s not anything they did wrong, it’s just the fellowship itself. The fellowship has always been that way. I remember people taking it years ago while having a tt job lined up.
Anyway, I got nothing, so it doesn’t feel great. Having a hard time working or doing anything these days. -
re: Marcus Arvan
Not trying to police this discussion here but can we please limit this space to news about interviews, rejections, etc? -
Yeah, sure thing – those of you who want to discuss job market stuff rather than report news, please head over to the job market discussion thread!
-
Ok folks, if you have news on the second round of interviews for Florida AI Ethics, please share!
-
@Florida, I had a first-round interview, and have not heard about a second-round. I was told second-rounds would be notified sometime in the beginning of April?
-
Thanks alsoFlorida: I had the first one as well, and was told that selected candidates will hear this week about a second round. Or maybe I misunderstood!
-
@Florida: Really! Strange. I was told the second round interview would take place the second week of April, and people would be notified the week before that. I interviewed a week ago, maybe things changed since then?
-
Anyone heard back regarding a second round interview with St. Scholastica? Or have any info on when people would be notified?
-
PFO from the McCoy Family Center for Ethics in Society, Stanford University.
-
Rhodes scheduled first-round interviews.
-
St. Scholastica is scheduling campus visit (second round) interviews.
-
St. Scholastica is scheduling second round interviews.
-
Any word about any of the following? Thanks in advance: Central State (open, TT), Southeastern Oklahoma State (open, TT), or University of Richmond (VAP, ancient?)
And I’m assuming that no one has word on Mount St. Joseph’s (open, TT), right? This is two years in a row of them posting an ad and then not responding to emails requesting updates. -
as someone who interviewed with Mount Saint Joseph last year, I can tell you that their communication is very poor. After the interview, I had to reach out to them to find I hadn’t made it to the next round.
I can only assume this year’s search is the same as last year but I don’t know that for sure
I have reached out to them this year only because I know who chairs the search and they have told me only that the search is still active. -
has anyone heard anything from muskingum?
-
PFO from Berkeley
-
Very interested to know if anyone ended up hearing from Florida this week!
-
@checking in: I know of at least one virtual campus visit for the Florida AI ethics TT position that has been scheduled
-
@anon ah shoot, okay. Thanks for the info!
-
Durham Assistant Professor in Moral, Social and Political Philosophy (PHIL21-54), Reference number: 20000936
PFO (was longlisted)
Any news on Durham Political Theory? -
Shortlisted at Durham for the moral, social, and political philosophy position. @recent PhD, I got a PFO from Durham political theory weeks ago, so you’re likely still in the running there if you haven’t heard anything.
-
Both MIT and Notre Dame tech ethics decided to hire no one. I guess there just aren’t any good philosophers looking for jobs.
-
Tech Ethicist: did you hear back from MIT and ND saying that they hired no one?
-
@question: No, but I have testimony from multiple, independent reliable sources. I feel justified in reporting it, given their reliability.
-
Thank you tech ethicist
-
@ Tech Ethicist In ND’s case, it could be because the director of the Tech Ethics Center is leaving and maybe they didn’t want to hire someone for that position when they need a new director.
-
MIT did not make any offers. Notre Dame made at least one offer but the candidate accepted another job.
-
Arizona, Department of Political Economy and Moral Science (PPE, career track) has scheduled first-round interviews
-
Any news on University of Calgary?
-
Insider knowledge: A Hecht-Levi Fellowship was accepted but later retracted, so there might be another opening soon.
-
Oslo is scheduling zoom interviews for the Philosophy of Logic postdoc:
https://philjobs.org/job/show/16802 -
Has anyone heard anything regarding any of the other recent philosophy of logic post-docs (uconn, concordia, etc.)?
-
Still interested to hear about Western Kentucky (TT, epistemology, metaphysics, mind, science, language) and Maryland (lecturer, PPE)
-
Does anyone know if University of Toronto Scarborough has made an offer, and if so, whether the offeree is likely to accept?
-
Does anyone know if Durham Environmental Phil has made an offer?
-
Does anyone know whether NYU bioethics (faculty fellow) has made an offer which was accepted?
-
Still trying to track down some info on the NIH bioethics post-doc. There was a PFO reported on here awhile ago, though several others reported not having heard one way or the other. Has anyone else received either a PFO or interview request?
-
I’m echoing these questions – Muskingum, Central State, and Calgary.
-
PFO Institute for Practical Ethics (UCSD)
-
@paranoid_but_informed was this for the general Hecht-Levi bioethics postdoc or for the mental disorder one?
-
@Wondering: It’s the general Hecht-Levi bioethics postdoc.
-
PFO from the University of Connecticut’s Humanities Institute
-
PFO McCain Postdoctoral position at Mount Allison University

Anyone ever hear anything about positions at Depauw, Wake Forest, or Rotman?
-
Anony: at least one virtual campus interview has been scheduled the week after the first round of interviews – someone posted the update on this website. I don’t know if other interviews have been scheduled (but I’m inclined to think so)
-
Texas A&M International U (VAP, open) is scheduling finalist interviews
-

-
Florida Gulf Coast University hired one of their own alumni for their TT position from earlier this fall/spring
-
PFO from Rhodes; PFO from Villanova, VAP

-
Did anyone hear about the position at NYU, Abu Dhabi?
-
PFO Eindhoven

Has anyone who had a first round interview at UT Dallas heard anything?
-
PFO Yale—logic, language, science. Ad: https://philjobs.org/job/show/16770
-
Rhodes has moved to ‘on-campus’ interviews.
-
Please: UT Dallas contacted finalists two weeks ago. Good luck.
-
Thanks for everyone’s help here. I accepted a position as a HS teacher and consider myself out of the hunt for college philosophy jobs. Happy with the decision. Best wishes to all of you!
-
PFO Wake Forest leadership postdoc
-
PFO from Wake Forest Leadership Postdoc followed by news of a new ad on Philjobs. Does that mean they didn’t like the pool they got the first round? I don’t think I’ve seen anything like this before.
-
Longlisted at Calgary (TT/Ethics)
-
Any news on Manchester (open)?
-
@aanon – the new Wake Forest postdoc listing is slightly different than the old one. It’s a two year position instead of one, and it’s a “character education” position rather than a “teacher-scholar” position.
-
@PLease, I just got a PFO from UT Dallas. Had a first round there.
-
WCU has made an offer, and it has been verbally accepted (wasn’t me, I was just the other campus visit).
PFO Riverside CC -
PFO Oklahoma State
-
PFO from Calgary
-
Any news on U Richmond (VAP, ancient?)
-
I’ve received neither a PFO nor any indication I’m on the longlist at Calgary. Anyone else still in the dark? It’s strange that some places do it this way!
-
Anyone hear anything from North Hennepin CC? (Posted on HigherEd Jobs but not PhilJobs). Deadline was Monday, April 5.
-
@anon regarding Calgary – same boat.
-
@Hey Nony and @anon I have also heard nothing from Calgary.
-
Re: Calgarian PFOS – I’ve had this delayed PFO thing happen to me a few times, and the only thing I can think of is that there is one hapless admin sending out individual PFO emails instead of one mass “Dear applicant” email. I always seem to get these emails last, and I’m guessing it’s because my last name comes at the end of the alphabet.
I personally take some solace in the thought that my PFO is part of a long, tedious task! -
Anyone who had a first round at Florida for their AI get a PFO yet? I know there are rumors that interviews have been scheduled, but I haven’t gotten anything.
-
My own Calgary pfo fresh in.
-
@AIAnon: I had a first round and haven’t heard anything yet. I assumed someone had been hired but yeah I haven’t heard one way or another!

-
Has anyone who was longlisted at Calgary heard from them yet?
-
Has anyone heard from Molloy or University of Indianapolis?
-
Wondering: Molloy’s deadline isn’t until May 1. It’s going to be a long wait, I’m afraid.
-
I’ve just received an email from the Boğaziçi University’s hiring committee. They are asking whether I am still willing to be in the candidate pool given the current politically messy situation in Turkey. I suppose this is a kind of generic email for all applicants?? Has anyone not received this email yet?
-
Curious, I got the same e-mail. I suspect it was mass e-mailed to all the applicants.
-
@ Gambling Addict, Thank you for your reply!
-
Central State (TT, open) is scheduling interviews
-
Xavier University (Besl chair) has made an offer.
-
Has anyone who interviewed with SUNY Buffalo ( non TT) heard back yet or know when they will be making a decision about the next step? I did not ask at the interview.
-
Wondering: I interviewed this past Monday and have not heard back. I kind of suspect that there is an internal candidate who may be renewed.
-
Has anyone who interviewed with Bethel and subsequently had their references contacted heard anything?
-
Anyone hear from Emory?
-
Anyone heard news from Central European University?
-
Has anyone heard from any of the following? Thanks in advance for any info.

Wondering …
just contact them, and ask when they think they will have made a decision. It is a normal thing to do. -
has anyone who interviewed at Albion heard about second round?
-
Spreadsheet: Do you mean the Leeds liberal arts job? I think it’s open AOS, but the ad was a bit opaque. I heard the long listing meeting is on Wednesday.
-
Calgary is scheduling virtual flyouts.
-
Buffalo scheduled second-round interviews.
-
UIndy anyone?
-
Anon, no word from UIndy yet.
Has anyone who interviewed at Denison heard back? -
Pfo for Richmond Ancient VAP; Kiu I haven’t heard back from Denison either. I’d expect them to contact people for the next round (?) by the end of the week.
-
Denison has scheduled at least one second round.
-
PFO North Hennepin CC
-
Hey folks, anyone knows what happened with Florida AI ethics? Did they hire anyone? Still waiting for my pfo after first round interview
-
@Florida?: I emailed them a week ago to check because I got another offer. According to the search chair, the have someone they are probably going to hire. i’m guessing the PFO is coming for us all, probably just doing some negotiating.
-
Any finalists receive offers from St. Scholastica or NOVA Southeastern?
-
Thanks nowarmweatherforme!
-
Does anyone have any information about NYU Abu Dhabi?
-
@The winter of my discontent: Someone has accepted the St. Scholastica offer.
-
Has anyone heard from Tulane’s VAP (deadline 4/5)? It was to teach ethics/social political/logic/phil religion…I can’t find the philjobs post even in the expired ads to link to here

any news about the Oxford moral philosophy postdoc(s)?

Bowling Green (TT)? Western Kentucky (TT)? Rhodes (TT)?
-
Read the previous thread T-Bone:
“Rhodes has moved to ‘on-campus’ interviews.
Posted by: rhodes | 04/12/2021 at 01:53 PM ”
“Interviews for Western Kentucky TT have been scheduled.
Posted by: A Name | 04/15/2021 at 07:35 PM “ -
Florida Gulf Coast has finally decided to inform first round interview candidates of their unsuccessful application.
-
Forgive the repetition, but I’m assuming there’s still no word on CU-Boulder (non-TT instr., various AOCs)? I had the sense that interviews would have gone out by now.
-
LMU Munich (Practical) has asked for additional stuff from longlisted candidates.
-
Sisyphus seeks a boulder: see previous thread
CU BOULDER: request for teaching video sent out today (three year instructor–NTT)
Posted by: rural juror | 04/12/2021 at 10:28 AM -
@anon, yes, the requests for videos were sent out (to a longlist?) a few weeks ago and then immediately retracted for FERPA reasons. I’m wondering about actual interviews since then.

Any info on Bowling Green?

Oklahoma State (VAP, open) is scheduling interviews.
-

-
Any second round invites to Utah Valley University (environmental)?
-
Anyone heard from Gustavus Adolphus College (VAP Philosophy of Science or Environmental Philosophy)?
-
PFO from Denison
-
Seconding the question about Bowling Green. Anyone?
-
I emailed Bowling Green two days ago to withdraw my application and I was told by the contact person that they would pass the info along to the search committee. This suggests to me that they have not contacted interviewees yet.
-
Any updates on Central European University (CEU)?
-
has anyone heard from Molloy?
deadline was May 1 -
@Wondering: CEU sent out PFOs yesterday
-
Still waiting for my pfo from CEU!
-
Thanks, Alexandru. Although I don’t love the continuing uncertainty that comes with not having received that PFO from CEU, I’ll take what I can get I suppose. Anyone know if CEU have contacted their short list with interview requests?
-
Molloy asked me for additional materials (teaching evals) on Tuesday, but I haven’t heard anything since.
-
PFO from the Rotman Institute of Philosophy (Western University)
-
Also haven’t heard from CEU. Reckon there are enough of us that we shouldn’t get our hopes up by putting too much stock in it. :/
Still, good luck everyone. -
Also haven’t heard anything from CEU. Any news about Indiana?
-
Indianapolis held first-round interviews.
-
PFO from CEU, about an hour ago
-
Does anyone have any news about the phil science/epistemology postdoc at the University of Vienna?
-
Has anyone who had a first round interview at either HKU or Lingnan (open search) heard anything back yet (i.e. either second round interview invites, or PFO)?
-
I am reliably informed that the Vienna postdocs have been filled.
-
@abc: argh! I suspected as much, but having heard nothing — and since I had initially been asked to supply additional materials — there was still that minuscule sliver of irrational hope… anyway, thanks!
-
Has Indianapolis scheduled flyouts?
-
Dartmouth has hired one one-year lecturer (race/gender) and is talking to candidates for a second (history). https://philjobs.org/job/show/17162

Has anyone heard from U Ill., Urbana-Champaign (non-TT lecturer, ancient)?
-
A bit confused by the CEU trickle. Are they sending the PFOs out individually?
-
Has anyone heard from any of the three LSE positions?
-
@Annie: it’s bizarre, I agree. The email I received was classic PFO – perhaps more polite and carefully worded than others I’ve received, but certainly not recipient-specific. Who knows… fingers crossed you have better luck!
-
Thanks so much @gt — and for the well-wishes, too. Fingers crossed for you with any other apps!
-
Really hate to be yet another person asking about Bowling Green but we’re coming up on a month since the deadline now and the new hire is supposed to start in August. And there’s been no news here or in my inbox. Does anyone close to Bowling Green know if they canceled the search, or if they’re just sorting through the (likely) enormous number of applications, or something else?
-
Miami University, OH (VAP Ethics/Environmental) is scheduling first round interviews.
-
Bowling Green has scheduled second-round interviews.
-
Does anyone know if the Singapore Management University teaching positions (critical thinking) are sending out offers yet? Last I heard there was 7 candidates and all the job talks/interviews should be done by now.
Thanks! -
Penn State (non-TT teaching, open) is requesting further materials (letters).
-
I’m under no illusion that I’ve been successful, but I’m very curious about what happened with the NIH Bioethics Post-Doc. I never heard one way or the other and my inquiries went unanswered. Did anyone else receive at least a PFO?
-
I am just purely curious about whether the University of Alberta hired somebody or not. It was a TT in Technology and Society Studies and the deadline was last October.
-
Has anyone heard from Bowdoin about their postdoc teaching fellowship? Their confirmation of receipt emails says “you will be notified if selected for further consideration” so I am guessing they will not be sending out PFOs….
-
Any news on either of the two Limited Term Appointments at University of the Fraser Valley?
https://philjobs.org/job/show/17270
https://philjobs.org/job/show/17274 -
Has anyone heard from Grand Canyon University?
-
Has anyone else noticed an apparent pattern of there being more hires than usual for jobs that were never advertised this year? (I know this is common at the senior level, but I’m talking about the junior level.) I can count at least three that I can think of, plus a bunch of people who gave what were very clearly job talks at institutions that didn’t put out jobs (i.e. clusters of three-four very junior people, most of whom didn’t have permanent jobs, giving talks on Fridays in January and February). This seems like a really bad development to me if true!
-
Has anyone heard from King’s College Halifax (the faculty fellow position for the Foundation Year program)?
-
Anonymous tenure track at R1: probably this is a topic for the job market discussion thread. But I’m just curious if you are willing to point at specific cases. I have in mind [moderator redacted] but I cannot remember any job ad. But even if this was the case (and I’m not sure it is), what is the problem exactly? Why can’t a department of a private institution hire whoever it wants, as departments often do with senior scholars? This is not a rhetorical question, I’m genuinely asking.
-
‘What’s the problem’ and ‘Anonymous tenure-track’: This kind of discussion does belong on the job-market discussion thread, rather than on the reporting thread. But regardless, I’m concerned about asking for particular examples, which is why I’ve redacted the example that ‘What’s the problem’ gave. In brief, my concern is that these discussions can very quickly result in casting aspersions regarding whether ‘X deserved to be hired’ or was ‘hired illegitimately’, and I don’t think those kinds of explicit or implicit implications are consistent with this blog’s mission.
If you want to discuss the general phenomenon of hires being made without advertisements, that’s fine–though I ask that the discussion be careful in terms of respecting this blog’s mission. Also, one quick note: isn’t it possible that some of the hires in question were for jobs advertised in previous job seasons? My sense is that sometimes people report their “new hires” on PhilAppointments years late in some cases. -
I know of at least one case where someone had an appointment for a position advertised the previous year, but because of covid, the hire was delayed from starting. So it need not be nefarious.
-
Has anyone heard from LMU Munich (Decision Theory)?
-
LMU Munich (Practical) has scheduled interviews for shortlisted candidates.
-
Any updates on Central European University (CEU)? Still haven’t heard anything after several on here mentioned receiving PFOs a week ago.
-
Does anyone know if Calgary has made an offer? Or has that decision not yet been made?
-
Penn State (non-TT teaching) is scheduling interviews
-
@Annie: I still haven’t heard from their either. Thought they said they’d be doing interviews now, too, so I wonder if they’re running behind, not sending PFOs to everyone, or what.
-
Ugh. I meant: “…from them, i.e., CEU either.” It has been a long year.
-
Oklahoma State University VAP positions have been filled.
-
Thank you, Vienna dreaming. It has indeed been a very long year.
-
I’m guessing there is still no word, but has anyone had an update on the CU-Boulder non-TT teaching position?
-
@Adrift: the rumor, secondhand but from a reliable source, is that CU Boulder (non-TT inst., various AOCs) has not yet sent out interview invitations and is likely to send them out sometime this week.
-
PFO from CEU. Best of luck to everyone else.
-
@Sisyphus thank you!
-
Did UTSC Bioethics (TT) ever get filled or did the search fail?
-
@UTSC-Bioethics: I have heard rumors that they decided not to hire anyone for that position…
-
I can confirm that in the end UTSC hired no one.
-
Seems nuts not to hire in a buyer’s market. Did the admin not like the short list or did their top picks get poached or what?
-
@UTSC-Bioethics I had a fly out for this job and I did not get any explanation for why the search failed. I don’t know if they ever made an offer or not, but given the timeline I got from the chair, they almost certainly didn’t make more than one offer. I would be very curious to know what happened.
-
Thanks anon — curious indeed.
-
Any news about fly outs for UIndy or Molloy?
-
Any news about the Bristol teaching lectureship (political philosophy)?
-
@anon: I had a first-round interview for Molloy two weeks ago, but still have not received any communication either way about a campus visit.
-
Molloy started second round interviews last week
-
Any word on the ancient teaching job at UChicago?
-
@Anon: oof, that’s rough. May i ask how you know? Best of luck to the remaining candidates.
-
Has anyone heard about a decision made after final interviews at Riverside City College?
-
@Wondering: an offer was made for the position at Riverside City College
-
I know it’s just been a few weeks since the deadline, but given that the jobs start in the fall, anyone hear anything out of Xavier about their VAPs yet?
-
@person, Xavier (visiting, AOC: history) sent out interview invitations very recently for this job, which I assume is what you’re asking about: https://philjobs.org/job/show/17378
-
Thanks, Cincinnati Dreamin’! Guess I can move on from that, then…
-
Any word on Calgary … anyone?
-
PFO from UMass Lowell (Phil.Sci. TT)

-
Any news about a TT job at Boğaziçi University?
-
Boğaziçi sent an email a few weeks back asking if I’m still interested given the recent events at the university. I assume it was a generic email they sent to everyone. No word since.

https://philjobs.org/job/show/17462 -
@another anon: I have it on good authority that they are requesting letters for long-listed candidates.
Indianapolis VAP scheduled interviews this week. -
I received an email from the University of Lynchburg in connection with their adjunct search (https://philjobs.org/job/show/17482) that essentially said ‘you know this is an in-person position, right?’.
I assume all applicants got this email and that it was sent because Lynchburg received an unusually high number of applications. -
The University of Exeter has scheduled the first round of interviews for TT positions in the philosophy of biology.
-
Franklin & Marshall has extended an offer for their VAP (Open/Feminist Phil) which has been accepted.
Concordia (Montreal) has conducted interviews and compiled a finalist list for their Limited-Term Appointment position in Continental and Social Philosophy, but as far as I know an offer has not yet been made due to bureaucratic hold-ups. -
Open University has sent out interview invites for permanent lectureship.
-
That is crazy, the Open Uni application deadline was the 4th of July. So it has taken them 4 days to review all the applications, decide on a shortlist, and get HR to arrange interviews.
-
Anything from Sydney on their ancient position?
