I read The Philosophers' Cocoon fairly often. It has been very helpful ever since I got a job teaching Philosophy at my current institution. I was searching for a post regarding naming Philosophy courses but I did not find anything. I was wondering if there could be a post with some suggestions on how to name Philosophy courses in a way attractive to students. I work at a teaching-oriented institution, and have been suggested by the Chair of my department and the Dean to name our Philosophy courses with "more attractive titles" to bring more students to our classes. But I must admit I have had a lot of trouble with that. I am the only full-time Philosophy professor at my Institution, so the pressure of making the Philosophy program relevant for our students relies all on me.
Sometimes, traditional course titles such as "Ethics", "Philosophy of (insert any topic here), or "History of X Philosophy", might not sound so appealing for students to enroll. I have seen some colleagues tweaking titles and changing, for example, "Philosophy of Mind" to "Brains, Minds, and AI" or "Introduction to Buddhism" to "Buddhist Paths to Nirvana". But it has been really hard for me to come up with creative titles for other courses.
If one of your contributors could speak to this matter, it would be very helpful.
Good question, and it could be a fun thread to share and brainstorm ideas! One example in my department is a lower-level course entitled, 'Minds, Brains, and Metaphysics.' It's basically a philosophy of mind course with some metaphysics thrown in, so it's just what the course title sounds like. And I suspect that the course gets good enrollment precisely because it has a cool sounding title: the first two words ('minds' and 'brains') seems to attract a good number of students interested in psychology and other sciences, whereas 'metaphysics' seems to attract students interested in philosophy. I highly doubt that a course simply entitled, 'Philosophy of Mind' or 'Metaphysics', would be anywhere near as popular, particularly among non-majors. All of our department's other courses, however, have pretty standard titles.
Anyway, I'm curious about other readers: has your department gotten creative with course titles in order to make them seem more attractive to potential students? If so, what are some cool sounding titles that your department has come up with? And, for those of you who don't work in a department with titles like this, feel free to brainstorm in the comments section below!
