In our recent discussion on whether new tenure-track faculty should get involved in or steer away from departmental politics, a reader asks: What do you mean by “departmental politics”?
Although no one answered in the comments section there, this is actually a really good question. Indeed, it occurred to me that quite a few grad students and postdocs might not know much about department politics. I actually know a few people who, once they got tenure-track jobs, were unhappily surprised and unprepared for just how much departmental and university politics exists. So, it occurred to me that it might be good to have a discussion thread cataloguing the types of politics one can run into in departments and universities.
So, in this thread, I'd like to ask readers to share general kinds of politics that can occur in academic departments and universities. As an important qualification, following the Cocoon's safe and supportive mission, I ask readers not to share any specific information, that is, information that might identify (either explicitly or indirectly) particular institutions, departments, or individuals (or indeed, lead such individuals to self-identify as likely participants in the kind of politics being discussed). If you do share in this thread, please stay away from details: just give the general kinds of issues that you've seen departmental and university politics arise regarding. The aim here is not to embarrass anyone, but rather to give grad students, postdocs, and readers like the OP a heads up on the kinds of politics they could face if and when they find themselves in a TT job.
