In our most recent "how can we help you?" thread, a reader asks:

I'm a graduate student working on modern philosophy. I'm trying to figure out where to attempt to publish my work. What is the hierarchy of journals that publish essays in that area?

Any readers have any tips?

I think people are likely to have very strong (and conflicting) views about precise journal rankings. I would say that JHP, BJHP, Archiv, and JMP are all top-tier journals. I think HPQ publishes some very good work also. CJP, EJP, JAPA, and AJP are not modern-specific but have very standards and do publish history of philosophy on occasion. I can think of some very good papers which appear in Journal of the History of Ideas too, though I’m less familiar with it as a journal.

For the specialist, Hume Studies is also very good and has a quick decision time.

Fellow grad student in history of philosophy here. Given that turn around time matters for one approaching the job market, I wanted to add my experience. I have submitted papers to JHP, Archiv, and BJHP. The JHP quickly desk rejected me with feedback (x2), which i take to be good practice! The Archiv accepted an article for publication after a vary drawn out revision process, taking well over a year in total. The BJHP accepted an article for publication after a quick review process, within about 7 months total. All that to say, I think you should consider submitting to JHP and BJHP.

Just here to add praise for the Journal of Modern Philosophy. Assuming @ttprof means to refer to them when he writes JMP. They publish excellent papers, and the review process is good, and that they are open access is a plus. Only downside is that since they seem to only really release one paper a month, the time from acceptance to publication can be quite long, but I guess you can add the paper to Phil papers or a website, if you have one.

As for the generalist history journals, my sense is that JHP is, by far, the most prestigious, followed by Archiv and BJHP, in that order. Oxford Studies in Early Modern is, it seems to me, the best among journals that focus on early modern, but they don’t publish much.

JHP and the top generalist journals (like PPR Nous and Phil Imprint) are, in my opinion, the top-tier venues, followed by Archiv and BJHP, in that order too (BJHP is somewhat a mixed bag in my experience). I am not sure where Oxford Studies in Early Modern stands–it might be roughly on a par with Archiv and BJHP. JMP and HPQ are a notch below, which is not to say that they don’t publish good papers.
