In our most recent "how can we help you?" thread, a reader asks:

I wrote a critical-notice-style piece of a recent book. After submitting it to Analysis Reviews, I was told that AR had already solicited a critical notice on the same book from another author. Now I'm wondering where else I might submit my piece. Which journals publish pieces in the style of critical notices or discussions? (What I've written is not really a book review, but an extended discussion of some of the book's main claim.)

Do any readers have any tips?

  1. Political Philosophy has “Survey Articles” that says “Just occasionally, they are extended discussions of some very important recent new book (for calibration: think ‘Rawls’s Political Liberalism’ or ‘Habermas’ Between Facts and Norms’).”
Free & Equal has “Review Essays: We welcome the submission of long-form review essays about recent books.”
Sorry if OP wasn’t asking about political philosophy journals though.

The Journal for General Philosophy of Science publishes such things, but clearly they have to be about books in philosophy of science. I just published such a piece recently.

I believe the Canadian Journal of Philosophy publishes such articles. Any area of philosophy.

Thanks for the replies. The book is in the philosophy of language. After reading a bunch of journal websites, it seems that Philosophical Quarterly, Inquiry, and Analytic Philosophy are all possibilities. The Canadian Journal of Philosophy (as well as the Australasian Journal of Philosophy) do critical notices by invite only.

Philosophia seems to accept reply style papers. JESP also accepts critical discussion pieces but that’s just for moral philosophy so probably wouldn’t be of use in this case.
