Job market reporting thread (2025-26 season)

Given that it's late August, new job ads are posting, and someone seems to have already asked for an update on one of the jobs on last year's reporting board, I figured now is probably a good time to start this season's job-market boards.

For those of you new to this, each year the Cocoon has two different job-market threads: one for job market discussion/commiseration, and another for reporting job-market news (interviews, on-campus invites, offers, rejections, etc.). As noted in previous years, the reason the Cocoon has two threads is simple: some people only want to discuss/commiserate but not hear about interviews, offers, etc., other people only want news, and other people still want both!

So, please feel free to bookmark or otherwise follow this thread throughout the job season (this fall and next spring), and post any news you have! Also, please do feel free to report on news for jobs in other departments that philosophers can be expected to apply to (political theory jobs in political science departments, AI-ethics jobs in interdisciplinary departments, etc.). Just make sure you specify the institution and department so that other readers and commentators don't confuse them with jobs in philosophy departments.

Two quick reminders:

  1. This thread is only for reporting news on the market (i.e. reporting interviews, flyouts, offers, hires, and so on), so please, report away! If you would like to discuss the job-market, please comment on the discussion thread.
  2. Please adhere to the convention of beginning comments with a tag (e.g. "QUERY", "UPDATE") so that other readers can easily search the page for the type of comments they are most interested in. 

Permalinks to both job threads will remain on the right side-bar of the blog through the end of the job season. Because of Typepad's functionality limitations (which only permits 100 comments before starting a new comment page), readers may elect to bookmark each new page of comments as each new page emerges. I recognize that it can be frustrating to scroll through page after page to get to new comments, and I think this is probably the best solution given Typepad's functionality limitations.

      For what it’s worth, I applied for a junior professorship there in December last year. Was asked for more documentation (articles and my PhD thesis) in Feb, and interviews were end of April later, so it does take a while. But I’d say that you would have heard by now about the request for research papers, if you were still in the running

        I found it through Euraxess, which is a poorly designated platform where you need to apply various filters before finding anything relevant. Many of the jobs posted there aren’t posted anywhere else. Since European universities like to be extremely secretive and restrictive, some of the jobs are only posted on their own platforms, e.g. a recent similar job in Aachen.

      No news on my end either. Not sure when you had your interview but mine was Friday. They said flyouts will happen around early-mid Nov so I assume we will hear back this week if we make the cut. You might know that already, but I hope that’s helpful if not. Fingers crossed for both of us.

        I haven’t heard anything from them either. Since it has been about 50 days since the deadline and they are looking for someone to start on 1 January 2026, I presume that they would have moved to the interview stage or beyond by now.

    ADVERT: There is a postdoctoral fellowship on a project in philosophy of logic and mathematics at the Institute of History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (IHPST) in Paris, which I haven’t seen advertised on other jobs sites (PhilJobs, jobs.ac.uk).

      NTU went to flyouts already (I know two people who got flown to Singapore and that was over the last two weeks).

      If you want to inside tea on UNC, from the whispers I have heard they want to prioritize replacing Marc Lange (phil science), as well as increasing political philosophy coverage, though anyone with the specific AOSes they listed will be considered. However, the job is not really “open” open, because they are going to receive like 350-400 applications and will need to cull very quickly due to delays in getting the job ad posted from the grad school. They most likely will cull by removing applications outside of the listed areas on the Philjobs ad. This is *especially* true if you do mostly ethics or epistemology, since the dept already has so much coverage in these areas.

    This thread is getting long, and it’s in everyone’s best interest—including yours—to make information easy to find and track, and not to add unnecessary anxiety to an already stressful time.

    Could we:
    1. Please submit only one school query per comment. This makes it significantly easier to track nested replies and ensures information about a specific school doesn’t get lost.
    2. Please be patient and not query soon after the deadline has passed. Committees need time to review hundreds of applications. For example, the queries for Baruch and UNC are in unreasonable timeframes. For many of the US applications with late-Oct deadlines, committees will only start sending out interview invites around end-Nov to early-Dec.
    3. If possible, please just wait instead of querying unless quite a lot of time has passed and no one has reported anything. Every new query often triggers a wave of anxious checking by applicants for that specific school, which adds to the general anxiety. Let’s aim to use this space for actual reported updates.

      I don’t have concrete information about their plans this year, but historically, UNC doesn’t seem to begin looking at PPE postdoc applications and doing interviews until after the main TT job cycle (i.e., early-mid spring). I think it’s worth applying still.

      I would say, after longer on the market than average, the vast majority of my information comes from Phil Cocoon. I have both been in the position to (i) have information, not post it immediately, but then post it when someone asks; and to (ii) not have information, and have it after having asked.

      Last year, about two weeks after flyouts, I inquired and was informed that a job offer went to another candidate—that was about 1.5 months before the department had the courtesy of letting me know. I, for one, am grateful I didn’t have to wait that long.

    Moderator here: some people like queries, other people don’t. We first introduced the query system a few years back to accommodate those who wanted to bypass them and search for only for UPDATEs.

    It’s fine to encourage people not to overdo queries, but if you do try to be cool about it so that things don’t turn acrimonious. The job market is hard on all. Please try to keep things supportive here.

      “I write with a brief update regarding the state of Bowdoin’s search for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Philosophy doing work related to AI. We have received more than 200 applications, and are currently reviewing them. Our plan is to come up with a list of semi-finalists to invite for Zoom interviews. Our hope is that invitations will go out before the last week of December, with Zoom interviews to be arranged for early January. A few finalists will then be invited to visit the Bowdoin campus once our students have returned from the semester break. On-campus interviews would likely happen the last week of January or early February. We thought we’d share this timetable in case it was helpful to you.”

        “Letters pulled” means that the institution requested letters of recommendation from your provided references.

        If you log into the portal where you applied to Loyola, you can click on the job application on the words ‘Reference Request’, and it will say “recommendation solicited” then yes/no next to each of your references. Then the other line will say ‘recommendation received’ and you can see if your letters have been received. good luck.

        I was told (kinda really strongly) to never reach out or check in unless they (search committees) initiate it first by so many seniors throughout these past couple years that I don’t think I’ll reach out. I think if I don’t hear anything — good or bad — by the end of January, I just move on. I’m actually surprised they didn’t reach out cause a couple other positions running kinda “late” sent emails to all applicants regarding their timelines.

        it is absolutely par for the course that you submit an application, hear nothing for six months, and then get a job talk with less than a week to prepare. also par for the course that you submit and never hear back.

      I have not heard anything yet either. I think he said they were meeting on the 5th (yesterday) to decide, but it probably has to go through the dean etc. to get approved. If I don’t hear anything back from them by the end of the week I’ll assume I’m most likely out. I will be sure to update here if I hear anything, though!

    UPDATE: CMU has decided to stop their search after zoom interviews, because they considered none of the long-listed candidates to be “a sufficiently good fit”, and thus they will not be hiring anyone.

    I find this very strange, because initially they said that the zoom interviews would be followed by a next phase of campus interviews for those short-listed. So did they really go from having a long list of viable candidates for campus interviews to an empty list, based just on 30 minute interviews with each of them? Or is that perhaps an excuse for a funding issue or something? If anyone has any inside information, I’d love to hear about it.

      I doubt it’s a funding issue, since this has happened to a few searches in the past couple of years and they typically just say that (so as not to be the bad guy!). This is in really poor taste, to be honest, for them to just come out and say that. I know MIT, USC, etc. do this kind of thing (not hiring anyone for a search in a given year if there’s not anyone fancy enough) but for CMU to do it is… interesting, to say the least. Not that it’s a good look when the uber fancy places do it, to be clear, but ya know. And to say it to the interview candidates is crazy! I’m sorry.

        Another possibility is that their preferred FIVE candidates (the top 5) – the only wants they really wanted – all accepted jobs elsewhere. This does happen. I worked at a place where the economics department routinely lost their TOP 10 choices

      Which job was this? There were several CMU searches this year. One in the Phil department, two through the Dietrich college, plus a postdoc.

        The open rank position with an explicit focus on causality and interdisciplinarity.

      The market is overrun with philosophers more than capable of fulfilling the position and most other positions out there… but they can’t find anyone? I don’t see how this isn’t an absolutely absurd take. There is something deeply wrong with academia and the job market if this is actually what they thought.

        I don’t think this is absurd. If most people think that they have to do XYZ in order to be successful on the job market, but XYZ is not actually conducive to the quality of your work, but rather some superficial thing, then there will be departments who see that and don’t want to hire anyone from that large contingent of applicants.
        Of course I do not know whether the antecedent of that conditional is true. But it might.

        Considering the state that philosophy is in, and academia in general, this does not surprise me. This may be a cynical take, but in my experience, hiring in academia is often incredibly shallow, and rarely based on legitimate defendable metrics. Mix that with the fact that its rare for committees to have a firm sense of what distinguishes long term success in a massively changing field (both for departments and individuals) – i.e. hiring determinations seem to be based more on traditional views of what a successful candidate should look like – leading to confusion when our departments get funding cut, or shut down etc.

        It feels a bit like Philosophy has no vision for the future, just practices for maintenance, and tendencies toward doomscrolling.

      Thanks, two anonymous friends. I didn’t get an Interfolio notification about a letter request myself, which is why I asked. But I did check the LSE jobs website and it says my application is still under consideration, but I don’t know how much stock to put by that given your information. The application also did say, “References may be requested at the application stage, the shortlisting stage or the interview stage.” But again I’m not sure how to interpret that “or”. On the balance of it, I think if you had letters requested it’s a much better sign than if not. Good luck, anonymous friends.

        I do remember them saying they’d get back to us next week, so I was surprised to hear from them so soon. I should clarify that I don’t have any information beyond my own, but in my experience they typically contact fly out finalists all at once. I can’t say for certain, though.

    For those who reported letters being pulled for the Skolnick application: what does it say on your application to indicate this? Did you receive an email notification or just check your application?

    I ask because on my application it says “Recommendation has been provided” under each of my references–I’m just wondering if that’s anything (assuming not unless corrected).
