I don't know about all of you, but I tend to find the very first day of class the most difficult of the year. Frankly, after all of these years, I still don't think I have the first day figured out very well. "Ice-breakers" always seem to come off as silly to me. Spending too much time on the syllabus puts students to sleep. Same goes for an introductory lecture in philosophical methods, which not only puts students into a daze, but usually seems to go over their heads. Argh. What do you all do? Seriously — I'd really like to have a good first day tomorrow, so what works for y'all?
(Yeah, I know it's a little late to post this, but whatever. Maybe I'll get something good right off the bat. Otherwise, maybe I'll learn something good for the future. At the very least, I suspect there are a number of other people who read this blog who might benefit!).
