If you'll allow, something a bit more lighthearted in the midst of all this job market doom. This has probably done the rounds before, but I just came across it. Since I'm currently working on a second revision of a paper that was sent out to a *different* referee after the first revision, I can sympathise with it (although I actually got pretty good comments). Anyway, follow the link, and enjoy: http://research.ivo-welch.info/humor-letter.txt

  1. I feel your pain. I had a paper rejected after two R&Rs. It was reviewed by the same referees, but they raised concerns the second time that they failed to mention the first time. Finally, after a second revision, the same referees recommended rejection (even though I addressed all of their concerns) apparently because they didn’t find my argument all that convincing to begin with (which made me wonder why they asked for revisions twice).

Moti: something similar happened to me as well. :/ So sorry to hear it. You would think people would have the sheer decency to not do such obviously awful things.
