In our most recent "how can we help you?" thread, a reader asks:

If one is an adjunct at one university, but at a different institution holds a research position (not TT), where does the adjunct work belong on a CV? Under 'Professional Experience' (i.e., as a professional affiliation) or under 'Teaching Experience'?

I guess since they are both professional experience, it seems to me most appropriate to list it under that section. But I'm not sure if there is a settled norm for cases like this.

What do readers think?

One response to “How to list adjunct work on a CV?”

  1. You can list any academic employment under Academic Employment (or Professional Experience, or whatever your c.v. calls that section at the beginning, right after Education). Just be crystal clear about roles and dates. So, rather than “Adjunct Instructor, [University]” something like “Part-time Adjunct Instructor, [University] (one course per semester for three semesters, [start year] to [end year]).”
Then in the Teaching Experience section, list every course you have taught or TA’d, again being crystal clear about the course level, class size, modality (in person, hybrid, online), university, and your degree of pedagogical responsibility (including: instructor of record, co-taught with x% effort, taught from a common syllabus, new course you created, etc.), dates, number of times taught, and anything else relevant. I have my Teaching Experience section divided according to the universities where I taught. If you don’t have many at any one place, you can list them together provided they are properly labeled.
