In our new “how can we help you?” thread, a reader writes:

Should you ask references to update their letters every single year? I’ve been on the market 4 years in a row and I feel like I’m burning through their good will and bothering them to update letters each time. My file hasn’t changed drastically every year. Is it really necessary? Will letters that are a year out of date sink an application?

My guess is that a year won’t make a difference, especially if one’s file hasn’t changed much.

What do readers think? Any insights from search committee members?
