Reader query on planning on-campus visits with a young child

In the comments section of our newest open job-market thread, a reader commenting under the handle 'Philosomom' writes:

I am a new mother (my child is less than 6 months old) and on the market. Any advice about how to deal with planning on-campus visits? I would like to bring my child with me since I am currently exclusively breastfeeding. My partner is willing to take off work and travel with me to care for the child. If you have had experience with this sort of situation (either on a search committee or as an applicant), I would greatly appreciate it.

Do any readers have tips or experiences that Philosomom and others in a similar position might find helpful?

    I did once something comparable, since I was at a conference with job-talks with my son, who was 6 months old, since I was exclusively breastfeeding him. My husband came with me and the whole experience was quite fun. Most people found it weird but I did get a temporary fellowship (I was very young at that point, just at the end of my PhD). The positive thing was that everyone remembered me —which was quite positive whenever I needed to write to them or to submit papers to their journals, conferences or the like.

    Check out the “academic mamas” group on facebook. People tend to have great advice for navigating this sort of thing.
